Love her or hate her, there is no denying the magnitude of talent that oozes out of Taylor Swift. Swift is an incredible lyricist whose talent and incredibly loyal fan base has given her an edge over other performers in our generation.
The 25-year-old sensation has broken many boundaries with not only her record sales but with the connection she makes with her fans. Swift is the only celebrity who openly allows fans into her home, never says no to a selfie and sends her biggest fans personalized Christmas gifts.
Although Swift has never been caught in the media partying or doing anything too out there, she still manages to get a lot of grief for being a serial dater. I get it, 25-year-old girls date, a lot. However, most of us don’t have the world watching our every move.
As previously mentioned, Swift writes all of her lyrics, and she writes them genuinely from her heart. Since Taylor has dated many men, mostly famous, her songs are bound to be about them.
The following is a list of ten Taylor Swift songs and the men they are written about. Not all of the songs are hopeless love songs; some are about chance encounters while others are about hope in something new. Taylor is a real artist who shares her pain, love and experience with the world. Her songs are relatable to so many which is a big reason why she is such a star. We don’t always know what song is written for what man but if you listen carefully she always leaves us clues!
10. "Better Than Revenge" - Joe Jonas
Okay, so in reality this song is not about Joe Jonas directly, but it is about Camilla Belle, the girl who Jonas broke up with Swift for in 2008. Joe Jonas not only dumped Swift for another girl, he did so over a 20 second phone call. Although the song is not directly focused on him, it is clearly still about their situation. The chorus says it all “She’s an actress, whoa, she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” This song was filled with heartbreak and pain and her fans love that Taylor got her revenge through her music.
9. "Picture to Burn" - Jordan Alford
Although many of you may not know who Jordan Alford is, he is the one who started it all. Alford was Swift's high school boyfriend. He apparently dumped Swift for one of her good friends, which left Taylor devastated. This was Taylor Swift’s first heartbreak and Alford unknowingly set the tone for her entire career. By them parting ways, Taylor was able to move on and became the international superstar, and him; well he is still with the girl he dumped Swift for. Who knows what would have happened to Ms. Swift had he not dumped her. Maybe we would have never known her name.
8. "Dear John" - John Mayer
I think everyone knew this relationship was doomed from the start. John Mayer is a talented, sexy, superstar who also happens to be one of the most notorious playboys in the industry. Mayer who was 31 and Swift, who was 19, couldn’t really think the relationship was a good idea, and when the relationship ended, the world was waiting to hear what song Swift would come out with about him. Taylor Swift really did not try and hide who this song was about, calling it “Dear John”. John Mayer later stated that he thought the song was a “low blow”…too bad John!
7. "Begin Again" - Conor Kennedy
Oh, “Begin Again”, a song with such hopes about new beginnings, new loves and fresh chances. Taylor wrote this song around the time she dated Connor Kennedy who is better known as RFK’s grandson. This sweet song is filled with innocence and hope. You can tell Swift had high hopes for this relationship and her fans were hoping this would be the one. Although the relationship did not work out, the song was a huge hit. It was nice hearing a song from Swift that showed the start of the relationship and did not just depict the end of it.
6. "I Knew You Were Trouble" - Harry Styles
This one I know for a fact it is about her ex-love Harry Styles because Taylor came out and admitted she wrote the song about the superstar. Taylor Swift even performed this song at the Grammys with Styles sitting within her view. She later stated that it was not hard to access emotion during her performance because the person the song was about was sitting right there. Swift even went as far as mocking a British accent during the performance, harsh! There is no denying that Styles hurt Swift, however we believe she got her revenge. Go Taylor!
5. “Forever And Always" – Joe Jonas
Joe really broke T-Swifts heart. She opened up about the song saying that “Forever and Always” is about a relationship she was in where she felt like she was just watching him slip away. This is a great song filled with a lot of intense emotion. Swift also has stated that the guy she wrote it about ended up breaking up with her for another girl. Hey and Joe’s relationship was a big inspiration to her work. You can tell through her lyrics how in love with Jonas she was and you can truly feel how deeply he hurt her.
4. "Enchanted" - Adam Young
Adam Young is the front man of the band Owl City and although the pair never dated, he was the inspiration behind this song. After Swift and Young met, he sent her an email apologizing for his shy behavior, stating that he was wonderstruck to meet her. The song "Enchanted" is really all about a chance meeting. Swift even uses the word "wonderstruck" in the song. Young was obviously extremely flattered and responded with his own cover of the song, tweaking it a little, as a message to Taylor. I don’t understand why this pair never worked, they would be adorable together!
3. "Style" - Harry Styles
Okay, so this one is fairly obvious, I mean the song is pretty much named after him! The track is from her most recent album 1989, which had record-breaking sales numbers, and tells her version of their relationship. Taylor Swift and Harry Styles dated for a little while and when they ended, everyone on the planet knew a break up song was coming. If the name of the song is not enough to make you understand who the song is about, listen to the lyrics “you got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt,” which pretty much describes Mr. Harry Styles to a tee.
2. “Back to December” - Taylor Lautner
This song was different for Taylor because it was not ripping the guy apart. The song Back to December, was in fact a sweet apology from Swift. The world loved this song and everyone who listened to it knew it was about Taylor Lautner. For those of you who are doubtful, not only does the timeline in the song line up with the relationship there are also a few lines that are pretty much a giveaway like “I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile.” Out of all of Swifts men, we really wish her and Lautner would have worked out, then they could have been referred to as the Taylors!
1. "We Are Never Getting Back Together" - Jake Gyllenhaal
Taylor fell head over heals for notorious ladies man Jake Gyllenhaal and I think everyone knew from the start that this relationship was ahead for a couple of break up songs. Many people, however, were uncertain about who this song was written for and it was not until the video was released that her fans made the connection to Jake. In 2010, during their relationship, they were photographed holding hands in Central Park. Taylor Swift was wrapped in Gyllenhaal's scarf, keeping warm. This exact moment was recreated in the music video for the song giving the world proof of who the song is about.
