Being a celebrity is often associated with being rich, privileged and glamorous. That being said, celebrities are constantly under the harsh spotlight. Their every move is reported on and scrutinized in great detail. Celebrities will often find themselves being criticized on anything from their talent to how they look on their day off. It comes with the territory, and celebrities must do their best to develop a thick skin. It’s very common for famous people to be the butt of a comedian’s joke, so being able to take a joke is serious business. The more the celebrity is in the news and tabloids, the more jokes might come their way. No press is bad press, all press is beneficial.
Comedy is subjective and sometimes what one person might find funny, another person can find horribly offensive, and in this day and age that happens often. Some jokes can be cruel and mean but they can still be hilarious and most likely aren’t meant to be malicious. However, there are the times when a celebrity can dish it out but can’t take it. There have been a few celebrities who have been on the receiving end of a (hilarious) joke and they just can’t handle it. They get upset and sometimes respond with a harsh insult or they threaten to sue. In most cases the situation will become even bigger and draw more attention to the joke. Nobody wants to be the butt of the joke, but getting angry might not be the best course of action. Here is a look at 11 Celebrities Who Can’t Take A Joke.
11) Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen has starred in several memorable films, such as Platoon, Hot Shots and Wall Street. He was also the star in the TV series, Two and a Half Men. He left the series in controversial fashion after a major falling out with the creator, Chuck Lorre. The two went back and forth with insults which resulted in Charlie’s catchphrase, “Winning!” However, Chuck would get the last laugh, mostly because Charlie didn’t find a certain joke funny. In the closing moments of the Two and a Half Men series finale, a Charlie look-a-like shows up and has a piano dropped on his head. The camera pulls back to reveal Chuck in a chair who says “winning”. Sheen did not find this funny and reacted in classic Charlie Sheen fashion by physically threatening Lorre.
10) Steven Seagal
He’s as tough as nails and a trained killer. Never make him mad or he’ll tear you apart…no not Steven Seagal… we’re talking about John Leguizamo. John Leguizamo is an actor, stand-up comedian and writer. He has appeared in several memorable films, such as Super Mario Bros., Carlito’s Way and Romeo and Juliet. Steven Seagal is a martial artist, actor and reserve deputy sheriff. He has appeared in several films including Under Siege, Exit Wounds and Machete. In 2010, Leguizamo released a one-man show, Ghetto Klown, based on his time in Hollywood. It includes a story about working with Seagal on the set of Executive Decision. While on set, Seagal elbowed Leguizamo in the stomach for no apparent reason and knocked the wind out of him. In his show, Leguizamo gets back at Seagal by saying he runs like a girl. Seagal didn’t like this joke and was so offended that he threatened to knockout Leguizamo the next time he sees him on the red carpet.
9) Jon Stewart
Jon Stewart is a comedian, writer and former host of The Daily Show. He’s a comic and is usually the one making people mad with his jokes. The animated series Family Guy, which is known for its offensive and crude humor, included a very subtle joke aimed at Stewart. The joke was done because Jon Stewart had decided to air The Daily Show during the 2007-08 'Writer’s Strike'. Stewart was none too pleased and in fact called up Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. According to Macfarlane, an angry Stewart phoned him and explained how Macfarlane was wrong. Seth stood by his opinion that he felt Stewart didn’t stand by the writers while also admitting that he understood how Stewart felt and they had “crossed the line".
8) Sean Penn
Sean Penn is a two-time Academy Award winning actor. He has starred in several critically and commercially acclaimed films, such as Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Mystic River and Milk. Chris Rock is widely regarded as one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time. He has appeared in films such as Down To Earth, Grown Ups and Top 5. He has also hosted the Academy Awards several times and sometimes his sense of humor doesn’t connect with everyone… especially Sean Penn. The joke that upset Penn didn’t even mention him and was aimed at Jude Law. Rock said, “Who is Jude Law? Why is he in every movie I have seen in the last four years?” Sean Penn didn’t like Rock’s brand of comedy and later felt the need to stand up for Jude. Before presenting an award, Penn stated, “Forgive my lack of humor, Jude Law is one of our most talented actors.” Talk about awkward.
7) Tim Burton
Tim Burton is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors alive. He is known for several of his critically and commercially acclaimed films, such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Batman. Kevin Smith is a director, writer and actor, who is best known for his critically acclaimed films Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma. The two worked together on the abandoned Superman Lives film that was in development in the 90s. The film fell apart for various reasons and caused some tension between all those that were involved. Later, Kevin Smith joked that Burton had stolen the twist ending of Planet of The Apes from a Jay and Silent Bob comic book. Burton didn’t think it was funny and noted that he didn’t steal from Smith because he doesn’t read comic books. The two went back and forth until Smith pointed out that he was just joking.
6) Ludacris
Ludacris is an actor and rapper best known for his hit singles, “What’s Your Fantasy”, “Southern Hospitality” and “Movie B**** (Get Out The Way)”. He has also appeared in many films, including Crash, Hustle & Flow and The Fast & Furious series. Ludacris was very upset over several jokes made at the Justin Bieber Roast in 2015. The jokes revolved around Paul Walker, who had tragically died roughly one year prior to the roast. Walker and Ludacris appeared together in the Fast & Furious series. At one point in the night comedian Jeff Ross joked, '"Move b****, get out of the way!" is what Paul Walker should've told that tree. Too soon? Too fast? Too furious?'”. Although many feel that it was just a joke, Ludacris felt that it crossed the line.
5) Steve-O
Steve-O is a television personality best known for his time on the reality series, Jackass. Both him and Amy Schumer participated in the Roast of Charlie Sheen. Schumer got huge laughs for her jokes aimed at Mike Tyson and Charlie Sheen. However, Steve-O didn’t like a joke Schumer made that referenced the passing of his friend and Jackass co-star, Ryan Dunn. She said, “I truly am — no joke — sorry for the loss of your friend Ryan Dunn. I know you must have been thinking it could’ve been me. And I know we were all thinking, Why wasn’t it?” The joke is clearly not aimed at Ryan Dunn but rather Steve-O. Later, he would respond to her in a radio interview with harsh insults but Schumer paid no attention to it. Schumer never apologized for the joke and she has gone on to have a very successful career, including creating and starring in Inside Amy Schumer, as well as the film, Trainwreck.
4) Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is a reality TV star and appears in Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Often, jokes about her celebrity s*x tape, 72 day marriage and family in general, are all over the place. She is constantly the butt of the joke (pun intended). Bette Midler is a three-time Emmy and Grammy Award winning actress and singer. She has appeared in several memorable films including Beaches, For The Boys and The First Wives Club. The issues all started when Kim posted a nude selfie to Instagram. The selfie caused controversy with several celebrities speaking out against her and in her defense. Bette weighed in on the situation when she Tweeted: “If Kim wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’s gonna have to swallow the camera.” Apparently Bette and Kim don’t share the same sense of humor. Kim went off on Bette on Twitter, claiming it was past Bette’s bedtime.
3) Donald Trump
Donald Trump is a real estate mogul, reality TV star and is currently running for President in the 2016 election. Trump has had several very public feuds with comedians over jokes they made about him. Trump demanded to see President Obama’s birth certificate to prove he’s American, which he did. Comedian Bill Maher, demanded to see Trump’s birth certificate as well. Maher jokingly claimed that Trump is the “spawn of his mother having s*x with an orangutan.” Trump actually provided his birth certificate as proof that he’s not half monkey. He then sued Maher for $5 million, which was withdrawn. Maher responded by saying, "This is known as parody, and it's a form of something we in the comedy business call a joke."
2) Kanye West
Kanye West is a rapper, musician and target for just about every late night talk show host. Kanye has received universal praise for several of his albums, including College Dropout, Late Registration and 808’s & Heartbreak. Jimmy Kimmel is the host of late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live. Kanye did a controversial interview with the BBC Radio where among other things, he compared himself to God. Kimmel aired a video of two young kids reenacting the same BBC interview where Kanye’s words actually seemed right spoken by a child. Kanye obviously didn’t like that joke and was upset that Kimmel was treating him like a “child” and not taking him “seriously”. Kanye responded by saying Kimmel’s face looks crazy, Kimmel hasn’t had any good female attention and that Kimmel’s ex-girlfriend Sarah Silverman, is way funnier. Kanye seems to have a difficult time taking a joke.
1) Donald Trump… Again
Donald Trump has so much difficulty with jokes about him that he deserves two entries, which he might take as a compliment. He has had many famous feuds with comics that mocked him or joked about him, such as Jon Stewart, Bill Maher and John Oliver. However, there is one feud in particular that Trump focused all of his attention on. Trump had a very public feud with comedian Rosie O’Donnell, after she made a joke at his expense on The View. Trump had decided not to fire Miss USA Tara Conner because of underage drinking and other indiscretions. Rosie did a hilarious impression that received huge laughs. She went on to say that he had gone bankrupt, was not a self-made man and had multiple divorces. Trump just laughed it off… of course, he didn’t. Trump responded with harsh insults calling her fat, ugly and a failure. The feud has continued over the years and proves each time that Trump just can’t take a joke. Trump can dish it out but clearly doesn't like when he's the butt of the joke.
