In the last couple decades the LGBT community has come a long way towards acceptance. More and more people are becoming comfortable coming out and being proud of their sexuality, no matter what it may be. Celebs like Miley Cyrus and Kristen Stewart have talked about not feeling the need to define themselves, while others like Ellen Page have found the strength to be publicly who they really are.
It's becoming a lot more accepted that sexuality and gender are not necessarily black and white. We all exist on a spectrum that may lean to one side or the other, or may be constantly in flux. While there will always be people out there who need a concrete answer to the question "are you gay or straight?" there are a lot more who are comfortable being both. To them love is about the person, not about their gender. Here are 15 celebrities who have come out as bisexual.
15. Amber Heard
Now married to Johnny Depp, Amber Heard has been open about having dated women in the past. She told The Independent, "I don't want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don't want to have to be defined by it." She went to say, "I don't imagine myself, my work, or my life, fitting into any kind of standardized path. In fact, the idea of there even being a standard freaks me out a lot." She's also talked about how being married to man doesn't mean she's any less bisexual. Who you're with at any given moment doesn't have to dictate your sexual orientation for the rest of your life.
14. Billie Joe Armstrong
The front man of Green Day has spoken in the media about his sexuality numerous times, including mentioning that Dookie incorporated a lot of bisexual themes. He first came out as bisexual in an interview with The Advocate in 1995. "I think I've always been bisexual. I mean, it's something that I've always been interested in. I think everybody kind of fantasizes about the same sex. I think people are born bisexual, and it's just that our parents and society kind of veer us off into this feeling of 'Oh, I can't.' They say it's taboo. It's ingrained in our heads that it's bad, when it's not bad at all. It's a very beautiful thing."
13. Anna Paquin
She may be married to Stephen Moyer, but Anna Paquin has always insisted that she is still 100% bisexual. During an interview with Zooey magazine she explained,"For me, it’s not really an issue because I’m someone who believes being bisexual is actually a thing. It’s not made up. It’s not a lack of decision. It’s not being greedy or numerous other ignorant things I’ve heard at this point. For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to."
12. Clive Davis
Music business mogul Clive Davis revealed in his autobiography, "The Soundtrack of My Life" that although he'd only had relationships and been sexually intimate with women, he decided to open himself up to the possibility of being with a man after his second divorce. “I'm still attracted to women," he added. "You don't have to be only one thing or another. For me, it's the person.” In an interview with Katie Couric, Davis said he hoped his coming out would lead to "greater understanding" of bisexuality.
11. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has always had a huge fan base in the LGBT community, and she's always been open about the fact that she herself is bisexual. She has said that her hit song "Poker Face" is about her bisexual identity. But she's sick of people assuming her sexuality is some kind of marketing ploy and has said, "You know what? It's not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into 'she says she's bisexual for marketing,' this is a f--ing lie. This is who I am and who I have always been."
10. Evan Rachel Wood
Evan Rachel Wood came out as bisexual in 2011 with a comment that Miley Cyrus had always given her "gay vibes" Recently she opened up even more on Twitter and talked about the judgement bisexual people still face. "Remember, bisexuality doesn't mean halfway between gay or straight. It is its own identity. I think in some cases people don't want to be labeled because they are ashamed to be bisexual. And this needs to stop." She talked about feeling ignored and brushed aside for identifying as bisexual instead of gay or straight. "Point being, its ok. We do exist," she wrote. "No one knows your journey but you. #BisexualAwareness."
9. Cynthia Nixon
Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame is currently in a relationship with a woman, but was with a man before that with whom she had two kids. In an interview with The Daily Beast, she said,"I don’t pull out the 'bisexual' word because nobody likes the bisexuals. Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals... We get no respect." A lot of people think that bisexuals are just undecided, or "on the fence" and it's only a matter of time before they make a decision one way or the other. But the reality is bisexuality isn't a choice any more than being gay or straight is.
8. Megan Mullally
Former star of Will & Grace, Megan Mullally told Queerty in an interview, "I said that I thought that everybody is innately bisexual. I think there are different levels of awareness attached to that, so I may believe that everybody is innately bisexual, but somebody who is very homophobic may not see that quality in themselves in any way, shape or form. That’s on a very philosophical or even metaphysical level, you know what I mean? It’s not something that I think people are ready for yet." She has clarified that while she hasn't been in a relationship with a woman, she's completely open to it.
7. Carrie Brownstein
Member of critically acclaimed band Sleater-Kinney and star of Portlandia Carrie Brownstein was outed as bisexual by an article in Spin when she was only 21 years old. Her parents had no idea she'd ever dated women before that. Years later, a New York Times article described her as openly gay even though she herself had never told them she was. She cleared up any confusion in a 2010 article (15 years after she was outed) saying, "It’s weird, because no one’s actually ever asked me. People just always assume, like, you’re this or that. It’s like, ‘OK. I’m bisexual. Just ask."
6. David Bowie
David Bowie came out as gay in 1972, but in an interview with Playboy in 1974 interview that he was bisexual. "It's true—I am a bisexual. But I can't deny that I've used that fact very well. I suppose it's the best thing that ever happened to me," he said. He later told Rolling Stone that his public declaration of bisexuality was the "biggest mistake he ever made," but when asked about that years later he told Blender, "I had no problem with people knowing I was bisexual. But I had no inclination to hold any banners nor be a representative of any group of people." It's never been clear whether he truly identifies as bisexual, or he just did some experimenting. He felt the need to label himself, and in the end he felt as though it held him back.
5. Megan Fox
Megan Fox may have been with Brian Austin Green for years and had two kids with him, but that doesn't change her sexuality. In an interview with Esquire she said "I think people are born bisexual and then make subconscious choices based on the pressures of society. I have no question in my mind about being bisexual. But I'm also a hypocrite: I would never date a girl who was bisexual, because that means they also sleep with men, and men are so dirty that I'd never want to sleep with a girl who had slept with a man."
4. Vanessa Carlton
Singer-songwriter, Vanessa Carlton is now married to a man, but during a 2010 Nashville Pride performance, she told the audience, "I've never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman". She's taken some criticism and skeptics have accused her of saying she's bisexual for the publicity. Arguments include the fact that she's only ever dated men. But the public has no idea what she does in private, and just because she's never dated a woman (and how do we really know she hasn't?) doesn't mean she isn't bisexual.
3. Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore first came out as bisexual in a 2003 Contact magazine interview. She said, "Do I like women sexually? Yeah, I do. Totally. I have always considered myself bisexual... I love a woman's body. I think a woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful. Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else." Barrymore is now married to a man, with two daughters, and there were rumors she had a relationship with Ellen Page before she came out as a lesbian.
2. Fergie
Black Eyes Peas singer Fergie may be happily married to Josh Duhamel now, but in an interview with The Advocate she said, "I think women are beautiful. I've had a lot of fun with women, and I'm not ashamed of it. The problem is that I also love a well-endowed man. But just because I enjoy women doesn't mean I'm allowed to have affairs in my relationship. I learned through talking with my therapist that it is still cheating even if it's with girls, so there is a rule there." The stereotype that bisexual people can't be faithful because they'll always want the gender they aren't currently with is clearly not always accurate.
1. Azealia Banks
In an interview with The New York Times rapper Azealia Banks briefly mentioned that she's bisexual. But she also added, "I'm not trying to be, like, the bisexual, lesbian rapper. I don't live on other people's terms." She's spoken out about not wanting to be defined by her sexuality, and society's obsession with putting everyone in a box based on who they're attracted to. Despite her status as a "gay icon" and her large gay fan base, she's made comments and gotten involved in online feuds that make her sound homophobic.
