In the U.S., the average height for a female is around 5 feet 5 inches, and for a male around 5 feet 10 inches. Americans are now the third tallest people in the world. Believe it or not, the tallest people on the planet are the Dutch, with a whooping average height for men of around 6 feet. The Danes are in second place. What about the shortest countries? It probably won't surprise you that the list includes Thailand and Cambodia.
Why does it surprise us when our favorite celebrities are short? Maybe we think of them as larger than life. How can Martin Scorcese, a giant of the directing world, be only 5 feet 3 inches? What about Bruno Mars, who is 5 feet 5 inches? Sometimes celebrities go out of their way to mask their height challenges. According to Fox News, the likes of Tom Cruise, Robert Downey, Jr., Mick Jagger and Simon Cowell, wear chunky heels or lifts to increase their height. Some reports say that Cruise stood on a box to kiss Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. Shorter female celebrities sometimes resort to dating shorter men or spiky high heels to give them a height advantage. A case in point: Jada Pinkett Smith is 5 feet tall, but in many of the pictures with her 6'2" husband Will Smith, you wouldn't know that he has 14 inches on her. Heels can be a petite girl's best friend.
Bearing in mind that the combined height of an average couple is around 11 feet and 3 inches, here is a list of some of the shortest, most petite, and compact couples to have strutted the red carpet. Some have split and some have stayed together. Here's a teaser: our shortest couple has a combined height of 7 feet 7 inches. That is the same as some of the taller NBA basketball players, and around 8 inches shorter than the tallest living man.
15. Nicole Richie: 5 feet 1 inch and Joel Madden: 5 feet 7 inches
Petite at 5'1", Nicole Richie is the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie; a poor little rich girl, reality TV star, sometime friend of Paris Hilton, and a society girl. She and Hilton were a big hit in the Fox reality show The Simple Life. Her biological father was a musician who briefly played with Richie. According to her, she moved in with Richie because her parents realized that Lionel and his wife could provide for her at a higher level financially. As a young woman she (together with Paris Hilton) seemed to have a monopoly on tabloid attention. And not all of it was good. Now married to 5'7" Good Charlotte musician Joel Madden, she seems to have settled a bit. They have two children, Harlow and Sparrow.

14. Kelly Clarkson: 5 feet 3 inches and Brandon Blackstock: 5 feet 6 inches
Poor old Kelly gets a lot of flack about her weight, which we will have to admit she could do something about. What she can't do anything about though, is her 5'7" frame. Pictures taken standing alongside a very tall Taylor Swift, make Clarkson look overwhelmed. Swift has 7 inches on her. It's hard to imagine that it has been 14 years since Kelly won the first season of American Idol. She was America's sweetheart and went on to establish a successful singing career. These days, she's married to Brandon Blackstock and she is the mother of two children. Hubby Brandon, is a 5'6" Texan and a talent manager,who is noted for his association with Blake Shelton. Having taken a baby break, Kelly can be seen in a recent Facebook video, alongside her daughter River Rose. Cute baby!

13. Woody Allen: 5 feet 5 inches and Soon Yi Previn Allen: 5 feet 4 inches
He is 5 feet 5 inches tall and a famous, successful motion picture director, comedian, and actor. His hits have included Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris. He was once famously associated with 60's actress Mia Farrow. They maintained separate homes in New York City, but were an item. Mia was famous for appearing in films such as Rosemary's Baby, being married to Frank Sinatra, as well as for her tendency to adopt children at the drop of a hat. And when she was married to composer Andre Previn, the couple adopted Soon Yi from Korea. Some call it "creepy" that Allen started dating Soon Yi, for whom he acted as a kind of step father. There have also been rumors that Allen molested Dylan Farrow, Mia Farrow's adopted daughter. Woody and 5 feet 4 Soon Yi, married in 1997 when she was 24 and he was over 60.

12. Zac Efron: 5 feet 8 inches and Vanessa Hudgens: 5 feet 1 inch
They were Disney golden children and actors and singers who appeared together in shows such as High School Musical. And when the two appeared to love up, the world was a happy place. They were an item between 2006 and 2010. Both have moved on to new loves. Zac has recently played an obnoxious frat boy in Seth Rogen's Neighbors (2014) and Neighbors 2 (2016). Hudgens has recently done a star turn as Betty Rizzo in the TV movie Grease Live! Apparently Hudgens, Efron, and fellow High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale, have all remained good friends.

The pictures of Bruno Mars next to Taylor Swift on a stage at the VMAs got almost as much attention as the ones of Miley Cyrus doing her twerking thing. Her 5 feet 10 inch frame dwarfs Mars' 5 feet 5 inch frame. All loved up and standing next to 5'4" model girlfriend Jessica Caban, he looks like a very happy man. The super talented singer/ songwriter got his first Grammy in 2011 for "Nothin' on You". Model Jessica, all of 5 feet 4 inches, won the first Model Lantino in 2008. The two live together in Mars' multi-million dollar home in Los Angeles. Another piece of interesting Jessica trivia: J.Lo chose her to represent New York in a competition for models for her clothing line. She didn't win.

10. Eva Longoria: 5 feet 2 inches and Jose Antonio Baston: 5 feet 6 inches
Eva Longoria hit it big playing Gabrielle Solis on Desperate Housewives. On the show, she went through an odd husband or two, had some kids, and, at the end of the series Gabrielle seemed not quite so desperate any more. Before Housewives, she was a regular on TV soaps such as General Hospital and The Young and the Restless. Then in 2013, Jose Antonia Baston came into her life. An astute businessman and president of hot Latin American media bran Televisa, Baston decided to sweep Eva off her feet. It worked. The two were married in 2016, amid much U.S. and Latin American press attention. Her 5'2" frame looks like a treat next to his 5'6" bod. The two 40-somethings appear totally happy and in love.

9. Little Wayne: 5 feet 5 inches and Antonia (Toya) Carter Wright: 5 feet 2 inches
In June of 2016, Lil Wayne hit the news when the press reported that the rapper's private jet had made an emergency landing in Omaha, Nebraska, after Wayne reportedly suffered multiple seizures. This was the latest in a long string of health scares. The 5'5" rapper joined Cash Money records when he was only 9 and has had a string of hits. Back 10 years or so ago, Lil Wayne and 5'2" powerhouse Toya, were an item on and off the stage. She had been his high school sweetheart and was a reality TV star (Tiny and Toya) and businesswoman. The two were married for 2 years, from 2004-2006. Reportedly, the split was not a totally happy one.
8. Prince: 5 feet 2 inches and Manuela Testolini: 5 feet 5 inches
Prince was (and will forever be) a rock legend, a mega superstar with an electric stage presence and a prodigious talent. His tragic death in 2016, reportedly from a drug overdose, was big news. The 5'2" who penned iconic songs such as "Purple Rain" was linked to a string of beautiful and influential women, including Kim Basinger and Madonna. 5'5" Manuela was his second wife, a businesswoman who met the legend when she worked for one of his charitable foundations. They were married for 5 years and divorced amicably in 2006. In 2011, Testolini married singer Eric Benet. At his death, it was reported that his net worth was around $300 million. There are few musicians that can equal his talent, flamboyance and appeal. He will be missed.

7. Emilio Estevez: 5 feet 6 inches and Paul Abdul: 5 feet
He is Martin Sheen's son and Charlie Sheen's brother. It won't surprise anyone to hear that as children the two fought like cats and dogs. The 5'5" writer/director has directed both Martin and Charlie Sheen and was once engaged to Demi Moore. 5 feet tall Paula was a Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader before breaking into singing and dancing. She was a go to choreographer for music videos in the 1980s and 1990s, and has done stints as a judge on American Idol. The two were married for a couple of years in the 90s. She has been in and out of the news for the odd legal scrape and rumors of substance abuse. After star performances in movies such as The Breakfast Club and Young Guns (as Billy the Kid of distinctive laugh), Estevez's career has struggled in recent years.

6. Kevin Hart: 5 feet 4 inches and Torrei Hart: 5 feet 2 inches
Kevin Hart has said that he discovered his funny side when, as a child, he cracked a joke to stop his mama giving him a whipping. He worked for a time as a shoe salesman before pitching it for comedy full time. The 5'4" Ride Along star and actress producer Torrei, were married from 2003 to 2011 and have two children, Heaven and Hendrix. Torrei's personal motto? "Never get comfortable." At 5'2", she is packed with energy, determination and drive. Kevin has gone from strength to strength and has been cast alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in 2017's remake of the iconic Robin Williams film Jumanji, about two kids who get trapped by a sinister, magical game. More good news: Kevin will wed 5'10" model Eniko Parrish, in August 2016.

5. Paul Simon: 5 feet 3 inches and Carrie Fisher: 5 feet 1 inch
She is 5'1" and best known as Princess Leia of Star Wars. And she came from Hollywood royalty. Her father, heartthrob singer Eddie Fisher, famously left her mother, the actress Debbie Reynolds, for none other than Liz Taylor. Cary Grant used to hang around and give her advice. Paul is all of 5'3" and the "Simon" of 60s mega-successful singing duo, Simon & Garfunkel. They met and he proposed after a New York Yankees game. They were married for a couple of years in the 80s, split up, then got back together again, then split again. At one point, a broken hearted Paul did what song writers do and wrote the now famous song "Graceland", about the breakup. She told Letterman it was "trippy" to turn on the radio and hear a song about her life. Depends on the lyrics, we think.

4. Snooki: 4 feet 8 inches and Jionna LaValle: 5 feet 5 inches
These two are reality TV royalty. She is Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, our shortest female celebrity and a mainstay of such hits as Jersey Shore. Like poor old Kelly Clarkson, she is often in the news because of weight issues. She gains weight. She loses weight. Jionni was first introduced into Jersey Shore in season 3 as Snooki's one night stand. And in season 4, the two became engaged. The talented Jersey boy is also a producer (Jersey Shore, Nicole and Jionni's Shore Flip). They married in 2014 and have two children. She stands at 4'8" and he towers over her at 5'5". In 2010, Snooki was arrested for disturbing the peace in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. We're not surprised that her arrest was taped by the Jersey Shore crew. Smart.

3. Rhea Perlman: 5 feet and Danny DeVito: 5 feet
Coming in at number 3 with a combined height of 10 feet, these two long-married celebrities are a massive 1 foot and 3 inches below the height of the average couple at 11 feet and 3 inches. She was the feisty Carla on Cheers and he was the lawyer who tried to mediate between battling Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, in the iconic War of the Roses. They performed together in the successful TV show Taxi. The two met in 1971 and moved in together that same year. Married since 1982, they have been at the center of rumors about DeVito's roaming eye. And in 2012, they separated, but were later reconciled. In 2015, they cashed in and sold their 14,500 square foot Beverly Hills mansion for a whopping $24 million.

2. Peter Dinklage: 4 feet 5 inches and Erica Schmidt: 5 feet 6 inches
If you see him eating meat on screen, it's really tofu. Vegetarian Dinklage stands at 4'5" and is just over a foot shorter than his wife Erica Schmidt. He's had a busy career with appearances in Chronicles of Narnia, as well as HBO's Entourage. In 2011, he was cast as Tyrion Lannister in the massively successful HBO show Game of Thrones. IMDb reports that he was author George R.R. Martin's number one choice for the role. Tyrion's humor and wit made him one of the show's most popular characters. And Dinklage has won two Emmy Awards for best supporting actor in a drama series. He and theater director Erica Schmidt, married in 2005 and have one child, a daughter.

English actor Warwick Davis is a busy guy. With recent appearances as Wollivan in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he is totally famous for his turns in the Harry Potter films as both the scheming goblin Griphook, and the bustling, nervous music professor Filius Flitwick. His big break came in 1983 when he was all of 11 and successfully auditioned for Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, after his grandmother heard a radio spot asking for people under 4 feet to try out for the film. He was 2'11" at the time. In the film he played an Ewok. With tongue firmly in cheek, he's also done a mockumentary about his life called Life's Too Short. He even helps run Willow, a talent agency for very short and very tall actors. He and Samantha Davis, have been married since 1991 and have three children.
