We cannot seem to let go of this magical '90s sitcom ― which is probably why Boy Meets World recently received a spinoff on Disney Channel, Girl Meets World. Although this show did not bring back our favourite moments from the memorable and iconic TV show, it did bring back a lot of nostalgia and memories.
You might feel a little old after you read this article, while we take you on a trip down memory lane along with Topanga, Cory, Eric, Shawn and Mr. Feeny. Just to inform you, Boy Meets World first appeared on television in 1993, and yet, re-watching the series will probably give us all the feels again. Not many sitcoms from today are able to evoke the emotions and laughter that the characters and storylines of Boy Meets World did ― bummer. However, despite being one of the most iconic shows of the '90s, the show did not go on without inconsistencies. Therefore, we want you to carefully pay attention to the details below and then re-watch the entire joke-focused show to notice all the plot holes we are going to point out. Real fans do not want to be reminded of them, but either way, the show still rocked our world. Don't be surprised if you scratch your head quite some time after reading the following.
The Start of Cory And Topanga’s Relationship
The two main characters that made us fall in love with the show, Cory and Topanga, had a love story that started when they were adorable and clueless children. One continuity error that you may have ignored about their love story was how it all started. Their relationship started when they were just kids ― admit it, you all had that puppy love thing going on once upon a time. However, in the early seasons of the show, the storyline shows them as rivals and not two little cuties in love. We saw their first kiss and them playing on the playground, but the moment Cory fell for her is not precise.
Topanga And Cory's Plane Ride
Cory and Topanga always gave us butterflies and made us want to squish them with their cuteness. Girls who watched this show, who are now in their 20s and 30s, and are still single are probably looking for a boyfriend as sweet as Cory who would take the girl he loves on plane rides. Newsflash: that Romeo stuff is fictional and usually reserved for shows and movies. In season five of the show, Cory apparently takes his beloved Topanga on her first airplane ride. Wrong: In season three, Topanga vacationed to Disney World and took a plane.
The Pizza Place
After re-watching the series, we recalled and kept one important detail in mind; there were no cell phones back then. And so, because of that simple factor, there are many obvious mistakes we discovered. One would be in the first season of the show when Shawn left Cory's house to pick up pizza and literally, less than a minute later, called Cory to inform him that Dykstra was at the joint, too. Without a cell phone, it would have been impossible for Shawn to walk to the pizza place that fast and quickly pick up an available pay phone to break the news.
Why And How Mr. Turner Disappears
The most illogical plot hole a show could commit is making a character disappear without reason, which is what Boy Meets World did with Mr. Turner. Mr. Turner, who became Shawn's mentor and father figure, and therefore an important character in the show, vanished from the iconic sitcom without reason after being hospitalized for a horrific motorcycle accident. There was no mention on the show of why he just abruptly disappeared, which makes it completely odd. This is one of the major plot holes we are still confused over.
Topanga’s Mom
Now this is one thing that is not often seen on a sitcom: a name change. We must have certainly been confused as children as to who Topanga's mom really was with all the different names being thrown around. Throughout the comedic series, Topanga's mom’s name changed three times! From Chloe, to Miriam, to Rhiannon, what child could have kept up? However, her name was officially deemed Rhiannon during her divorce. With such inconsistency, who knows the truth?
Cory And Eric’s Little Brother
We know that not all sitcoms are realistic when it comes to portraying real life stuff, but ages should be appropriately portrayed as no one miraculously ages five years just like that. Plot holes like these cause a gap in the storyline because they do not make any logical sense. Cory and Eric get a younger brother named Joshua when they are both in college, which took place not too long before the series' end. However, not even a year goes by after Joshua's birth and suddenly, Joshua is seen as a grown child and not an infant. Did they feed Joshua a lot of greens and fast forward his life?
Alan’s Birthday
Re-watching this sweet sitcom has been a joy, but we've become more conscious of their itsy-bitsy errors. In season seven of the family comedy show, in the episode “Family Tree,” we spotted a little mistake. During this episode, it is Christmas time and they are seen not only celebrating the holidays, but Alan's birthday too. Wait, hold up! In the episode "Honesty Night," we are told that Alan's birthday is on June 14. We guess the directors forgot they gave him an actual birthdate; it caused a major gap in the storyline since they went full pin and celebrated his birthday while diehard fans scratched their heads.
Their Graduation Year
It is the little details that count; now that we are older and more aware, when re-watching the series, it was easy to point out the little booboos. Early in the goofy show, in an episode called "Class Pre-Union,” we see the triple threat Shawn, Cory, and Topanga have a vision of their lives after graduation. Okay, cool, but Mr. Feeny tells them that they are the class of 2000. However, by the show’s end, later on in the series, their big graduation day was in the year 1998.
Alan’s Career
Yes, we notice all the little inconsistencies in the storyline of the '90s sitcom; inconsistencies lead to illogical happenings, like Alan's supposed career background. In early episodes of the show, Alan is heard bragging about his time spent in the Navy. Let us first point out that Amy and Alan said they got married right out of high school. However, when Eric discusses the whole military thing later with Alan, Alan corrects him by saying that he was actually a cook with the coast guard. If they got married that quickly, that would have left him no time to do either job.
Morgan’s Age
It appears characters on the show were fed magic beans. If a person sporadically jumps a few years, that is definitely an illogical event in the storyline, but we love Boy Meets World despite all that. We just wanted to always pinch the cheeks of little baby sister Morgan, and that is probably because for 3 years, she stayed the same age. Suddenly, baby Morgan had a huge growth spurt and became a witty young girl. We know time flies, but it is obviously impossible to grow in the blink of an eye.
Shawn’s Sister
Shawn and Cory were so opposite from one another; Shawn was the rebel and Cory followed his lead. They always found themselves in sticky situations, and it always came down to them fixing it, except the time Shawn and Cory decided to challenge themselves by trying to straighten Cory's hair. Without hesitation, Shawn calls his sister Stacy for advice ― because she's a girl and knows the smart thing to do. She offers advice and you would think we'd hear from her again when another problem arose between the two. However, after that moment, she is never seen or mentioned.
Amy’s Career Life
Who didn't love Cory's mother? Amy Matthews' career was not stable throughout and showed the inconsistencies of the show. During season one, we learn that Amy has a career, like most people, outside of the home; we are told she is a real estate agent and then working at a museum. However, the entire time she is portrayed as a stay-at-home mom. To make things weirder, she later takes on a creative writing course because she says all she's ever been is a "wife and mother." How odd to say that when she apparently worked.
Topanga And Her Personality
Okay, so the reason Topanga was named Topanga was because she had hipster parents ― peace, man. At the beginning of the series, we see her parents as crazy hippies, which also made her into a total hippie kid, that did not belong with the rest of the kids. However, there was a drastic change in Topanga and her parents. Topanga, not too long into the show, suddenly becomes the popular girl in school who is a girly girl with her '90s hair, while he parents suddenly became normal adults with marital and life issues. Yes, people do change, but the family went from free-spirited to suddenly normal in a day.
Mr. Feeny’s Home
Some plot holes in the show really just make us giggle, but that is one reason why we love the show so much. Everyone loved Mr. Feeny, so when he retired and moved, it was like we just lost one our life mentors and best friends. When Mr. Feeny decides to retire, he sells his house and makes his way to Jackson Hole. In true sitcom style, Mr. Feeny comes back, and surely, he's living right next door to the Matthews again like he didn't move. How would that be possible if he sold his home?
Cory And Shawn’s Friendship
We fell in love with the relationships and friendships in the show, like the one between Cory and Shawn. Throughout the series, it is repeated over and over again that the hilarious and slew duo have known each other forever. Topanga and the boys all meet when they are around 6 and Cory says at a point that Mr. Feeny has always been their only teacher. However, there is in an episode where Mr. Feeny states that Shawn lived in Oklahoma and by the age of 12, had already been to five different school. So clearly that would mean that the boys did not meet until they were 12 when Shawn arrived in Philly.
Skipping Grades
The show often confused us because we followed Cory and the gang throughout their education with Mr. Feeny, however, the grades were pretty inconsistent. If you binge-watch the show, you'll notice that they skip eight and eleven grade. If the writers were more vague about what grades the kids were in, we would have never noticed their mess up. Maybe Topanga was smart enough to skip grades, but Shawn and Cory would have never been given that option.
Topanga’s Friend Angela
When Angela showed up, she added a little bit of sass to the show. But where did Angela come from? Did she pop out of a bush or something? We know the show is fictional, but Angela literally came out of nowhere and seemed to have immediately become Topanga's best friend and then somehow ended up at the exact same college at Cory, Shawn, and Topanga.
Topanga’s Long Walk
Because we were so in love with Cory and Topanga's love story, we really did pay attention to their relationship; all the minor details too. We know that love makes people do crazy things, but how Topanga would have gotten to Philadelphia to be with Cory without a car is just illogical. We're sure she would have walked a thousand miles to see him, and in season four, Topanga runs away from her new home in Pittsburgh to walk to Philadelphia. Even if you do not know your geography, you would logically know that that walk was impossible. It is a five-hour car drive!
Eric’s Intelligence
What a bummer, our beloved Eric went from intelligent to completely idiotic. But how does that happen? What a major plot hole. Eric in the early seasons of the comedy was a popular and intelligent prep boy who was only getting bad grades because he spent too much time being Romeo and chasing girls. Suddenly, during Eric's college years, he goes from completely smart and silly to dumb. He was the comedic relief that was needed in the show, but it was never explained to us how he went from the smart underachiever to a moron who could not tell the difference between a can and a jar. This was a continuity error that did not make sense.
Eric And Cory’s relationship
Eric was a fan-favorite, but he was an inconsistent character. One major example, that is actually a plot hole in the show, is the dispute between the two in season seven of the show when Cory initiates a yard sale. Eric and Cory are supposed to clean the garage and organize a yard sale together, but instead, Cory turns to Shawn and Topanga to do it with. By leaving Eric out, Eric gets angry and claims Cory has left him out for years. However, all that is untrue and inconsistent to the storyline, because during season seven, when Cory always wanted to hang with his older brother, Eric was the one to shut him out. And throughout the show, while Eric had a penchant for girls, he always asked Cory to not talk to him and to get lost. So Eric is really just being a baby about the garage sale.
