On February 20th, Beyoncé launched her long-awaited hair care line Cécred – later announcing she was giving away $500,000 in cosmetology scholarships and salon business grants through her charity organization BeyGood.

Beyoncé's hair care line Cécred was one of the main subjects discussed in a then-recent interview the singer gave to Essence — as well as whether the singer's 2013 pixie cut was related to a rough patch in her marriage to Jay-Z.

As for BeyGood, Beyoncé founded the public charity in 2013 – apparently a busy year for the singer.

Beyoncé Launches Cécred

Ahead of the launch of Cécred, Beyoncé provided a markedly candid and wide-ranging interview to Essence in February.

Entitled "Beyoncé, The Boss," the piece explained the singer first "teased" her coming hair line in a May 2023 Instagram post.

At the beginning of the article, Bey's mom, Tina Knowles, spoke about the family's links to both hairstyling and the cosmetology industry:

"'Hair has always been a very big part of our lives,' says Ms. Tina Knowles. 'Just as fashion saved our family, hair is how we made a living.'"

"In Beyoncé’s formative years, Ms. Tina was a hairdresser who owned and operated her own salon. She says her career in cosmetology is but a continuation of what Black people have done for ages.

"'In the culture of Black folks, all the way from the beginning: If you could do some hair, you'll never be broke,' she explains. 'I told my kids that. My mama told me that. So it’s just our legacy, and this full-circle moment feels amazing.'"

One of Essence's first question to Beyoncé was about her early memories of hair, and her mother's salon.

Beyoncé responded:

"I have vivid memories of my mother working as a hairstylist right from our home. She built a small salon at the back of our house, and I can recall catching glimpses of her while I watched cartoons or played with my dolls and toys.

"These moments are etched into every corner of my childhood memories."

Later in the interview, Essence appeared to indirectly ask Beyoncé if her 2013 pixie cut was related to personal turmoil (presumably her marriage to Jay-Z), and the singer answered affirmatively.

Beyoncé Gives $500,000 For Cosmetology, Salon Grants

Beyoncé launched Cécred on February 20th, and on the same day, her charity BeyGood announced a $500,000 cosmetology fund.

On Instagram, BeyGood (@BeyGood) published a lengthy post with a video, about the $500,000 fund for salons and aspiring cosmetologists:

In the post's caption, BeyGood first said:

"Have you heard? We are proud to announce the Cécred x BeyGOOD Fund, which will provide financial support to cosmetology students and professional hair stylists within the beauty industry."

Beyoncé's $500,000 grant had some stipulations – and was not available everywhere, as the post explained:

"An annual $500,000 will be given in scholarships and salon business grants across five markets, the schools were chosen for their large, diverse community of hair stylists in : Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New Jersey.

"And we are PROUD of the five participating cosmetology scholarship schools, they are : Beaver Beauty Academy, Trenz Beauty Academy, Franklin Beauty Institute, Universal College of Beauty, and Janas Cosmetology Academy."

The post then directed eligible people to apply at BeyGood.com/Cecred, where a landing page detailed the program, saying of the cosmetology grant:

"Each year, twenty five $10,000 financial aid student scholarships will be granted across five cosmetology schools with inclusive curriculums in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and New Jersey."

As for the salon business grant, BeyGood explained:

"We recognize running your own business is difficult, no matter if you rent a booth, operate a salon, or work out of your home. Each year, twenty five $10,000 grants will be awarded to qualifying salon business owners in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New Jersey so they can continue their transformative impact in the community.*"

Applications for Beyoncé's $500,000 scholarship or grant opened on February 20th, with a submission deadline of March 20th; recipients will be announced on April 20th, and additional application cycles will follow.
