Five years after its final season came to an end, Community's creator has revealed that there have been renewed discussions about making a movie.
There's an unwritten rule in television that once a spinoff movie of a TV show is made, the show starts on a downward spiral. It might not disappear altogether, the effect might not even be apparent right away, but after a year or two, the show doesn't tend to be as popular as it once was.
There are examples, some or all of which are arguable. The Simpsons and South Park, for example. Both shows continue to this day, long after successful movies related to the shows were released in theaters. However, both The Simpsons and South Park were arguably more popular before they released their respective movies.
With that in mind, creators of a TV show who are considering making a spinoff movie might want to wait until after the show has run its course. The last hurrah and a proper goodbye on the big screen. Six seasons and a movie, if you will. That's a mantra made popular by Community's Abed who would repeatedly say it throughout the duration of the show.
Five years after the end of season six of Community and fans are still waiting on that movie. Just as we had given up all hope, the show's creator Dan Harmon has thrown us a glimmer of hope. Harmon told The Wrap that while nothing is concrete or set in stone, a renewed interest in Community has led to certain discussions. "There are conversations happening that people would want to be happening and that I'm very, very excited about the coming months," Harmon admitted.
Harmon also added that Community fans should keep their expectations low, but it seems as if we might finally be getting that movie. This news comes a few days ahead of a Community reunion taking place next week. Harmon will be joined by Jeff (Joel McHale), Troy (Donald Glover), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Annie (Alison Brie), Abed (Danny Pudi), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), The Dean (Jim Rash), and Ben Chang (Ken Jeong), to read through an episode of the show together. Online via video chat, of course.
