In 1974, she participated in the  22-mile Bay of Naples race where she swam for a total of 8 hours and 11 minutes. A year later, she again swam for almost 8 hours around Manhattan. It was in 1978 when her first attempt to swim from Cuba to Key West happened. She swam for around 42 hours which covered almost 76 miles. In 1979, she again set a record when she swam from Bahamas to Florida without using protective shark cage. With an average of 3.7 miles per hour, Nyad swam for a total of 27 1/2 hours. Later on, she had to give up swimming due to shoulder pain, asthma and ocean swells.

In 1986, this American swimmer was inducted into United States' National Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and in 2003, she became an inductee to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She is also an inductee in Lake Forest College and Pine Crest School.
