The widow of one of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs, Tompkins, 74, lives quietly in London. Her late husband, Richard, founded the Green Shield Stamp business in 1958 and made a second fortune from the Argos catalogue shops, which he sold to BAT Industries in 1979 for £32m.
