With a reported net worth of $25 million, it doesn’t seem like Ewan McGregor would struggle to afford the proper permits to carry out renovations on one of his properties. But it looks like he may have tried to cut a few corners during his latest project, and it’s coming back to bite him in the butt, legally speaking.

The Star Wars alum is facing accusations of conducting unlawful renovations at his £2.35 million ($2.9 million USD) 10-bedroom estate located in Scotland.

Perth and Kinross Council has initiated an investigation into allegations of planning breaches concerning the property. McGregor alleged began modifications to the master bedroom and bathroom suite, which may have been executed without proper planning permissions.

While a building warrant was secured for the renovations last year, the council claims that planning consent was also required but never approved. Council officials reportedly corresponded with McGregor to inform him of the issues, highlighting the necessity of obtaining permission for certain alterations due to the property's C-Listed protected status.

The issue is apparently still under investigation by the council, but it’s hoped that it’ll be resolved by mid-March. For now, McGregor hasn’t spoken about the legal troubles. But there’s a chance he may have to pay more to resolve the issue (such as if he’s slapped with a fine) than if he'd sought out proper permissions to begin with.

The Scottish property – located only 30 minutes from where the actor grew up – is a new purchase for Ewan, who bought it last May.

The residence includes a gate lodge along with a courtyard containing several outbuildings. Featuring three livable floors, the home boasts over 15,000 square feet of living space, including a two-bedroom flat, storage facilities, and a wine cellar situated on the lower ground floor. There’s also an entrance hall, three reception rooms, a billiards room, a family room, a study, and a 1930s hothouse/conservatory, offering a diverse range of living and entertainment spaces within the property's expansive layout.

Ewan and his family have apparently been subjecting the property to renovations since buying it nearly a year ago, perhaps in hopes of making it their full-time residence.

McGregor reportedly splits his time between his native Scotland and Los Angeles, where he’s raising his child with Elizabeth Mary Winstead after meeting on the set of Fargo (they married in 2022). He also has three older children from his first marriage.
