Actress Alyson Hannigan is a recognizable face among fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) due to her stellar sense of humor, giving us lines over the years that have become popular catchphrases in the past decade or two. Remember, "This one time, at band camp…."?

With a net worth of $40 million, a husband, and two children, Hannigan has managed to create the ultimate balance between stardom and personal privacy. Not much is known about how she spends her wealth, but what we do know is, she's not done making an impact in the entertainment industry.

Starting Early

Before her first birthday, Hannigan appeared in her first film, an instructional video called 'Active Parenting', then went on to appear in print ads and commercials for the likes of Duncan Hines, Oreo, and McDonald's. By the age of 11, Hannigan and her mother moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream, and she quickly earned roles in popular television shows like Roseanne and Touched by an Angel.

As a teenager, Hannigan had hit the big screen in a not-so-successful film "My Stepmother is an Alien" and another lead role in the ABC sitcom Free Spirit. Throughout all of the auditions, filming, ads, and networking, she still managed to attend California State University and earn a degree in psychology.

Making it Big

In 1997, Hannigan grabbed her breakthrough role as Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) quirky best friend, she began to earn a fan following and, just two years later, appeared in her iconic role as Michelle Flaherty in American Pie.

Hannigan returned to star in the American Pie franchise three more times, in 2001's American Pie 2, 2003's American Wedding, and 2012's American Reunion. In the meantime, she landed her most financially lucrative role as Lily Aldrin in the hit CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, from 2005 to 2014.

The cast included big names like Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, and Cobie Smulders, to name a few, and according to Celebrity Net Worth, in "Friends" fashion, the group stuck together during financial negotiations and earned a whopping $300,000 per episode toward the end of the successful series.

Where is Hannigan Today?

She's still working, perhaps not so much in the spotlight, but taking low-key parts as the host of Penn&Teller: Fool Us and lending her voice as Claire Clancy in Disney's animated series, Fancy Nancy. Married to her former "Buffy" co-star Alexis Denisof, the pair have two daughters, and that alone can keep the star busy.

According to The Things, syndication alone from Hannigan's successful television career earns the star around $2 million annually from HIMYM. Add in the syndication earnings from Buffy, and Hannigan wouldn't have to work again if she didn't want to.

Future projects include the recently released Food Network's Girl Scout Cookie Championship, new film Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched, alongside Mira Sorvino, and family project Flora and Ulysses with co-stars Ben Schwartz, Danny Pudi, and Kate Micucci.

The Real Estate Queen

While the many ways Hannigan spends her fortune are kept under wraps, we know this for sure, she has a love of the real estate game.

In 2002, she purchased a Santa Monica home for $1.96 million and sold the home in 2018 for $8.2 million. In 2015, Hannigan purchased a 1930's California home for $7.9 million and, in 2016, put the house on the market for $8.8 million. The family essentially flipped the gorgeous mansion featuring a newly remodeled kitchen and outdoor multi-room crafting compound, People reported.

The couple owns an Atlanta, GA home (Hannigan's hometown), which they bought in 2014 for $800,000 and have recently listed the property for $1.4 million. Their current Encino home was recently a topic of conversation when Hannigan revealed the home had been used for the filming of the hit television show This is Us.

Enjoying Life

Hannigan and her family have been seen vacationing on Catalina Island, California, Hawaii, and Vancouver, Canada, to name a few.

With her own awesome comedic timing, it makes sense that Hannigan often appears on stage in an effort to further her own comedic chops but also to appreciate those in the profession. She's participated in the celebrity-supported Stand Up to Cancer event and various Comic-Con activities.

While she does own a Lexus CT 200H and Lexus RX 400H, a Chanel Bag and plenty of fashionable clothes, Hannigan doesn't appear to have extreme collections of cars, artwork, accessories, or the like. Living low-key allows the star to enjoy her work and her personal life simultaneously, without having to choose one or the other.
