American singer, songwriter, and actor Joe Jonas and English actress Sophie Turner appear to have caught a classic case of the celebrity real estate fickle. Even though they bought it only just over a year ago for $11 million, the pop star (and reality competition judge) and the “Game of Thrones” alum have hoisted their swank 1980s waterfront mansion in an exclusive Miami enclave on the market at almost $17 million.
The couple moved to Miami from Los Angeles, where they sold an Encino mansion for $15.2 million to superstar DJ Zedd, and settled in the guard-gated Bay Point neighborhood, where listing agent Carl Gambino of Compass told The Wall Street Journal that other high-profile residents include coupled singer/songwriter Enrique Inglesias and retired tennis player Anna Kournikova.
According to Dirt, Dominating its .37-acre waterfront corner parcel, the Jonas-Turner home spans almost 10,500 square feet, with half a dozen bedrooms and eight and a half bathrooms. Marketing material suggests the home is “reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s legendary creations.” And it does bear some of the architect’s signature hallmarks, such as carefully chosen organic materials used in innovative and unexpected ways, and airy, light-filled spaces with enormous windows that allow for an easy back and forth between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The couple engaged interior designer Sarah Ivory to refresh the place. (As was pointed out by WSJ, Ivory is married to Gambino.) Water features in the soaring, coral-walled atrium entry were replaced with lush, tropical vertical gardens, and an amoebic gold-toned coffee table and deeply tufted, low-slung furnishings covered in rich jewel-toned fabrics, all of it set upon a plum-hued silk rug below a lavender glass chandelier, were employed as plush foils to the massive double-sided coral stone fireplace and the geometric wood frieze that embellishes the 30-foot-high living room.
Other highlights include sleek, chef-accommodating kitchen arranged around a double-wide snack bar island that’s topped with a stone counter that waterfall over the ends, and a formal dining area decked out with hand-painted jungle themed de Gournay wallpaper. The vintage Venetian glass chandelier and bamboo chairs painted a very Lilly Pulitzer shade of green add to the room’s old-school Palm Beach vibe.
Colors are paler, more muted in the mostly monochromatic bedrooms, while the family room showcases a meandering Hans Hopfer-designed Mah Jong sofa covered in a kaleidoscopic array of fabrics from Missoni Home.
Outside, amid lush foliage, emerald carpets of lawn and lighted trees, there’s an outdoor kitchen and two swimming pools, one for the grownups and the other for the tots. A low coral stone wall and a towering row of palm trees provides a screen of privacy between the pool and the 94-foot dock that runs along the waterway that provides easy access to both the bay and the open waters of the Atlantic.
Gambino declined to reveal to WSJ why Turner and Jonas have decided to sell so soon after they moved in so, who knows if they plan to buy again in Miami, high-tail it back to Los Angeles, or perhaps even relocate to Turner’s native England. Whatever they do, for now they still have a place in Manhattan to call home, a three-bedroom loft in Nolita that they bought in 2018 for $5.6 million and unsuccessfully tried to sell in 2020, first at $6.5 million, then at $5.9 million and finally at $5.4 million before it was taken off the market.
