Johnny Depp proved that he still has a legion of fans — with some willing to spend thousands to catch a glimpse of the actor in court — and now one lucky Depphead has the chance to take home the bladed glove worn by the star in his 1990 smash-hit, Edward Scissorhands. The glove, which is expected to sell for $50,000, is headed to auction just days after Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, derided him as someone who “convinced the world he had scissors for fingers.”
Depp sported the iconic movie prop — set to hit the auction block sometime next week — during an iconic scene in the fantasy romance novel in which his character turned an ice angel into a snow flurry for Kim, played by Winona Ryder.
The future owner of the bladed glove might have the opportunity to recreate the classic scene, although it might not be encouraged, as the blades on the prop are real — at least according to the auctioneer, Propstore.
“The hand-fabricated metal blades on this hand were originally created as mold masters; the molds made from them were used to produce the urethane blades Depp wore throughout the film,” a description of the product reads. “The practical SFX team then took the metal blades and built them onto the pole-rig for use in insert shots of the blades actually chopping things such as ice.”
The auctioneer’s website expects the piece to sell for up to $50,000. So far, the intimidating glove has received three bids, with the highest coming in at $20,000. The bladed glove, which is said to have exhibited extensive wear and aging, includes a letter of authenticity from Richard Landon, the film's mechanical department coordinator.
The auction comes on the heels of the Pirates of the Caribbean star's big court win against his ex-wife, in which a jury ordered Heard to pay the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, a judge later reduced the punitive damages to $350,000 per Virginia law.
During a recent sit-down interview with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, Heard asserted that the Jury witnessed a performance by a“fantastic actor” who “convinced the world he had scissors for fingers.”
