Remember the show called “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” where the host Robin Leach would always wish you champagne wishes and caviar dreams? The show ran for 11 years between 1984 and 1995 and featured the opulent homes of rich and famous individuals.
It was the stuff that dreams were made of. It allowed regular viewers like you to witness and experience even for only an hour how the wealthy lived their lives. It also allowed viewers to aspire for something better, unrealistic as it may have been.
While the show is now defunct, a cable television channel in the United States and Canada offers a similar series that allow you to peek into the lives of the rich and wealthy. The channel is Home & Garden Television, or HGTV, and it has a show called “Million Dollar Rooms.” It features only the best in luxurious living and high-end design from all corners of the world.
The show is usually given access to the most exclusive of spaces, be it a nightclub, garden or home. As long as it is a unique and one-of-a-kind space that has been lavishly spent upon, the show is bound to feature it.
One such spectacular space that has been featured is the extravagant home of Brian and Kim Ross. The house is located in Cortland in the state of Ohio and the interior alone measures 50,000 square feet. It was designed to highlight grace and elegance, with several customized rooms that would mesmerize friends and other visitors.
Inside the House
When you enter the house, you will be greeted by a sweeping dual staircase designed specifically for the Ross’ home. This foyer has a stately elegance that will mesmerize even the most jaded visitor. You will immediately notice the marble columns and floors, marked by an inlaid tile medallion. Look more closely and you will the ornate and intricate work that accompanied the design and layout of the floor. The high level of craftsmanship is duplicated in the entire home.
Get to the top of the stairs and you will get a bird’s eye view of the welcome foyer. This perspective will afford you an amazing view of the chandelier and the arched windows of the entryway.
It also has a swimming pool located inside the house. It includes replicas of the ruins of the Mayan civilization, including carved stone idols. To ensure that the design of the carvings is correct, the family hired as consultant a professor in Aztec and Mayan history. These idols are lighted upon by natural sunlight courtesy of the glass ceiling. Massive beams made of wood, in turn, support the ceiling. This private lagoon was inspired when the Ross couple took a vacation at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.
The pool also features waterfalls that flow at a rate of 800 gallons per minute. Palm trees, water slide, rope swings and a hot tub surround the entire area.
The water slide is a ride in itself as it has been designed using special computer software to allow it to provide fast and thrilling downward action. It is a veritable tropical paradise right in the middle of Ohio.
The house also features a library that has been described as a bibliophile’s refuge. A reading nook bordered out by a curving wooden banister highlights it. This small space overlooks the entire library. The entire room’s panels are made of cherry and walnut stock, which were taken from the forest located inside the Ross’ property.
The house also features a music and performance room. It is located adjacent to the library and features an airy and open space designed to maximize the acoustics and enhance the listening experience. The room has a French baroque style ambiance to highlight its classical design.
Another highlight of the house is its amazing home theater. It is designed just like an actual theater, meaning that it includes a kiosk for tickets, theater doors and display posters at the lobby. Prominently shown are the posters for classics from the 70s, namely “Star Wars” and “Jaws.”
Inside the theater are plush seats surrounded by Corinthian-style columns and wall sconces. The design and ambiance of the movie house have been deliberately styled after the iconic film palaces during the golden age of Hollywood.
The classic feel is extended to the 50s-style diner located near the theater. To lend authenticity, glass tiles, neon and art deco adorn the diner. Inside are items like Formica tables, booths and serving counters. Burgers, fries and malts are served, making this room a favorite among the Ross’s kids and their friends.
Million Dollar Garage
The house has two garages that are climate-controlled. One of the garages is dedicated to classic, vintage and late-model Ferraris. Though it can pass off as a museum for the Italian car giant, the amazing thing is that all the cars can actually run, as the Ross couple intends them to be driven.
The garage includes the much sought-after Enzo, a rare car that is one of the most technologically advanced in the world. That, in itself, is already worth a million dollars. Other models in the collection may actually be more than $10 million.
The garage also features the 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport, one of only two units that exist throughout the world. It is the favorite room of the couple, especially of Brian, who dreamt of having his own Ferrari when he was just in his 20s. in just a few decades, he was able to own an entire collection of different models, shapes, colors and sizes. The great thing about it is that he would always have first dibs whenever a new model is released to the market. That’s because the Ross couple has their very own Ferrari dealership.
As for all their other vehicles, they are housed in another garage that is also climate-controlled. The only difference is that none of them sports the prancing horse of the Italian luxury car giant.
