Since 2011 when reality singing competition series The Voice went on the air in the U.S., 13 people have traded placed in the four rotating coaches chairs. They have all been A-list musicians who have had long and successful careers.
Who has been a main coach on the series, and what’s their net worth? The figures and the ranking might surprise you.
Jennifer Hudson - $20 million
Hudson rose to fame on the third season of another singing competition show, American Idol, where she surprisingly placed seventh back in 2004. First serving as a coach on The Voice UK, she became one of the main coaches on the U.S. version of the show from 2017-2018.
In addition to being an accomplished singer with a powerhouse voice, Hudson is also an actor. She notably won an Academy Award for her role as Effie in the 2006 film Dreamgirls. She made her Broadway debut in The Color Purple in 2015. She has also earned coin as a spokesperson for Weight Watchers and will next be seen in the film adaptation of Cats.
Cee-Lo Green - $22 million
This singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actor was a coach from 2011-2014, appearing for four seasons. Best known for his songs “Crazy” and “F*** You,” Green has released solo albums as well as collaborations with Gnarls Barkley and many other musicians and groups.
He also voiced Murray the Mummy in the animated film Hotel Transylvania and had his own show, CeeLo Green’s The Good Life. He has also made TV commercial appearances and owns part of the sake brand TY KU.
John Legend - $45 million
Currently People’s Sexiest Man Alive, this singer, songwriter, producer, actor, and philanthropist is an EGOT holder, having earned an Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, and Tony award for his multifaceted work.
As one of the newest coaches on the series for the last two seasons, Legend has released many musical albums and collaborated with many other artists. Being named one of six celebrity Google Assistant voice options, he has done plenty of charity work with brands like Tide and Columbia University’s Earth Institute.
Kelly Clarkson - $45 million
Another coach who became famous from American Idol, Clarkson was the original Idol who won the first season of that show back in 2002. Since then, she has become an accomplished singer and songwriter with a long list of number-one hits.
First joining The Voice family in 2018, she currently serves as a coach and won the latest season. She also hosts her own variety talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and does philanthropic work to support causes like unwanted animals, safe teen driving, and child hunger.
Blake Shelton - $80 million
As People Magazine’s 2018 Sexiest Man Alive, Shelton has been a coach from the very beginning, making him the longest-running coach and the only one to have appeared on every season since the show’s inception.
The country singer and songwriter has had many chart-topping albums and singles, and he has served as a judge on other competition series, including Nashville Star and Clash of the Choirs. He also pads his wallet through his own restaurants and entertainment complexes called Ole Red.
Alicia Keys - $100 million
This accomplished singer-songwriter is also a classically trained pianist who has had a number of hit songs and albums, both on her own as well as via collaborations with other artists.
Named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in both 2005 and 2017, Keys is also known for her humanitarian work, philanthropy, and activism. She is co-founder, and Global Ambassador of the non-profit organization Keep a Child Alive, aimed at fighting HIV/AIDs. She has also done voice work and some acting. She was a coach on the show in seasons 11, 12, and 14.
Adam Levine - $120 million
The second-longest running coach, this season is the first that Levine didn’t appear in the far-left seat to provide humorous and insulting banter (in jest, of course) with Blake. As frontman for the band Maroon 5, Levine has had a successful music career since the ‘90s, both with his band and other collaborations.
Also a songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and actor, he made his acting debut in American Horror Story: Asylum and has launched his own fragrance and menswear lines. He also owns a record label and production company, 222 Records and 222 Productions.
Gwen Stefani - $150 million
Originally known as the lead singer and co-founder of the ‘90s band No Doubt, Stefani quickly emerged as a successful solo artist with top hits like “Hollaback Girl” and “What You Waiting For?” She joined the series as a coach in 2014, where she met her current boyfriend Blake, and has coached off and on since.
With plenty of awards and accolades to her name, Stefani also beefs up her income as a successful entrepreneur. She has her own clothing line, L.A.M.B., along with fashion dolls, perfume, and even an animated series.
Pharrell Williams - $150 million
While Williams is known recently for top hits like “Happy” and collaborations like “Get Lucky,” he has had his hand in the music industry as a producer for decades. He’s the force behind many top hits of the past like “Rump Shaker” and “I’m A Slave 4 U.” Known for producing amazingly catchy beats, he is also a self-professed nerd and Trekkie.
Williams, who was a coach on seasons 7 through 10, has composed movie soundtracks for films like Despicable Me, and has his own creative collective, record label, fashion and footwear brands, jewelry, and more. He also owns a non-profit educational organization.
Miley Cyrus - $160 million
As a coach for seasons 11 and 13, Cyrus is best known for her status as a top pop music star and actor. She got her start starring in the kids’ series Hannah Montana then went on to have an explosive music career.
Growing up in the spotlight, she has shifted between music and acting, most recently appearing in the latest season of anthology series Black Mirror. She is also an animal rights advocate and founded the non-profit Happy Hippie Foundation that focuses on youth homelessness and the LGBT community.
Christina Aguilera - $160 million
This powerhouse vocalist is one of many who got her start on shows like Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club. She went on to achieve massive success as a pop singer, with charting albums since her self-titled debut in 1999.
As one of the original coaches and the first female coach to be crowned winner with Alisan Porter in season 10, Aguilera appeared in the first three seasons then returned for seasons 5, 8, and 10. She has also acted with a recurring role on Nashville and continues to tour musically.
Usher Raymond - $180 million
Known simply as Usher, this singer, songwriter, actor, and dancer broke onto the music scene in the ‘90s with a long string of number-one hits. Today, he is one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
He owns his own record label that signed mega pop star Justin Bieber. He has also acted, done endorsement deals, and has business ventures ranging from restaurants to fragrances and a school supplies company. He is co-owner of the music streaming service Tidal and part-owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He coached on seasons 4 and 6 and won the latter with Josh Kaufman.
Shakira - $300 million
It might a surprise to know that this Latin pop star and musical artist with the hips that don’t lie is the richest among all of the coaches, past and present. Coaching in seasons 4 and 6, Shakira rose to fame in the U.S. market in the early ‘00s and has been going strong ever since.
As one of the world’s best-selling music artists, she also acted in a Columbian telenovela, launched her own beauty line, and voiced a character in the animated movie Zootopia. She also founded a Columbian charity to support special schools for poor children.
