Netflix has greenlit Troll, a Norwegian monster flick from Tomb Raider and The Wave director Roar Uthaug, which is set to debut in 2022. The film, which is based on the Scandinavian legend, tells the tale of an enormous creature that awakens after 1,000 years inside the Norwegian mountains.
Mad as hell, the massive troll tears through the countryside as it heads towards the Norwegian capital of Oslo. The film, based on an original idea of Uthaug, will be produced by Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud of Motion Blur, the Norwegian company responsible for Netflix’s Cadaver.
Uthaug, who can’t wait to “unleash this Norwegian monster on the world,” says that he has been toying with the idea of Troll for over 20 years, adding that it’s a dream come true to finally develop it with Netflix and Motion Blur.
Roar Uthaug has a reputation for making an impact on a budget. His breakthrough horror film, Cold Prey, was a box office hit in Norway and generated several sequels. With his 2015 disaster film The Wave, which envisions a massive earthquake causing an enormous tsunami that ravages a small town in a Norwegian fjord, he caught Hollywood's eye. After his success with The Wave, he was recruited to direct Alicia Vikander in the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot for Warner Bros. and MGM.
David Kosse, VP of International Original Film at Netflix, says the streaming service is ecstatic to develop a project of this scale with Uthaug and Motion Blur, adding that Uthaug is a very talented filmmaker whose Norwegian roots will add authenticity to the movie.
Producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud were excited to bring the Norwegian folk tale to life in a film "played, directed and produced by Norwegians for the global market." Netflix will release Troll worldwide in 2022. A release date has yet to be announced.
