Less than two weeks after he was let go by the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett agreed to join the coaching staff of an NFC East rival.
On Friday, ESPN's Ed Werder reported that Garrett was hired to become the new offensive coordinator of the New York Giants. He'll join the staff of new head coach Joe Judge, who previously served as special teams coordinator of the New England Patriots.
Garrett served as head coach of the Cowboys from 2010 to 2019. He was seemingly on the hot seat every year during his tenure with America's Team, but owner Jerry Jones remained patient and loyal to Garrett, until the end of this season.
The Cowboys entered 2019 with major Super Bowl aspirations, but they finished a disappointing 8-8 and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years.
That prompted Jones to make a coaching change, and he replaced Garrett with Mike McCarthy, who served as head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018 -- leading them to a Super Bowl XLV Championship.

New York fired head coach Pat Shurmur after just two seasons on the job, and Judge will be their fifth head coach since the 2015 season. The former was recently hired to be the new offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.
Though Garrett was never able to guide Dallas past the NFC Divisional Round, he only had one losing season at the helm. He oversaw the development of quarterback Dak Prescott, and Garrett's Cowboys consistently fielded one of the NFL's best offenses.
He should fare nicely on a Giants team that consists of elite running back Saquon Barkley, young quarterback Daniel Jones and a solid pass catching group that includes Darius Slayton, Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard. The Giants have missed the playoffs in three consecutive years now, but there's good reason to believe that Judge and Garrett can help them buck the trend.
