In the midst of the coronavirus lockdown, it is easy to lose track of what celebrities are up to. Some, it appears, have been busy making important life decisions. On Monday, Nicki Minaj, 37, surprised the world by announcing that she's expecting her first child with husband Kenneth Petty.
The rapper captioned a photo of herself on Instagram, "#Preggerz." Sporting new yellow curls, Minaj appeared in a flowered bikini and platform heels cradling a sizable baby bump. Her post was immediately innundated with comments from fans who congratulated her on the news.
"Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude," she responded. "Thank you all for the well wishes. đ."
Some had suspected that Minaj was pregnant a couple of months ago when she took part in a Q&A on Twitter, telling one fan that she had been craving red meat and salad with "extra jalapeĂąos." When asked by another fan if she had morning sickness, she tellingly responded, "Lmao. No throwing up. But nausea and peeing nonstop. Omg what do u think this means guys???? Lmaooooooooooo."
Without either confirming or denying the news of a pregnancy, she simply stated, "The world ain't ready yet." Judging from the pictures, the rapper might be due this fall, which would coincide with her first wedding anniversary. Minaj and Petty, who dated for a year, got married last October. On an episode of Lil Wayne's Apple Music series, Young Money Radio with Lil Wayne, she said settling down has been "good" so far.
"I can't complain. I really cannot freaking complain," she said. "I didnât think it would be as refreshing and calming as it is. Even if you're not married, when you have someone that feels like your soulmate or someone who understands you, it just makes you feel like youâre on top of the world."
In an interview with ET last October, Minaj expressed a desire for a family, saying that the couple was definitely âpracticingâ but that she was uncertain of making a commitment to parenthood since she still had things to do. It now appears the coronavirus lockdown has been the perfect time to get pregnant since any professional responsibilities have been put on hold.
In her 2014 song "All Things Go," Minaj revealed that she had an abortion as a teenager but believed it was the right decision at the time. The last year has been incredibly difficult for the rapper since her brother Jelani was sentenced to 25 years to life for predatory sexual assault against a child in January. The news of her pregnancy is in many ways a new, happier beginning for Minaj.
