Pleasant Rowland started her career as an educator in several states. From being a teacher, she became a news anchor and anchor for a local ABC station, KGO-TV from 1968 to 1971. After she left the industry, Rowland pursued writing textbooks. At that time, she has already established herself as a publisher and has created a language arts program called Beginning to Read, Write, and Listen.

In 1986, she founded Pleasant Company which manufactured American Girl dolls, books, and accessories. Twelve years later, Rowland sold the company to Mattel for $700 million.
