Iron Man might have sacrificed himself for the sake of the universe last year, but apparently, there's a tiny chance we might get to see him again.

Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing movie of all time at the box office in 2019, and with good reason. The movie represented the culmination of 22 movies spanning more than a decade, and the end of phase three of the MCU. It also brought an end to the story arcs of two of the franchise's biggest characters.

The biggest ending and moment of all was the death of Iron Man. Tony Stark managed to steal the Infinity Stones away from Thanos and attach them to his own Infinity Gauntlet. Stark stared Thanos in the eye, uttered the iconic words "I am Iron Man", and snapped his fingers, saving the universe but sacrificing himself.

The MCU continues on now without Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Joe Rogan recently asked Downey Jr. if the right opportunity were to present itself, would he ever return as the metal-clad hero. The bad news is that the Dolittle star effectively said he will never return as Iron Man. The good news is that he left the door open, even if it is ever so slightly.

"There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious," Downey Jr. said to Rogan. There are a number of ways Iron Man could pop up in the MCU. Time travel was introduced via Endgame, so it's possible a Stark from a different timeline could show his face. The next MCU movie, Black Widow, is a prequel set before Iron Man's heartbreaking demise, so it's also feasible he could make a cameo in that movie.

There are various rumors out there pertaining to how and why Downey Jr. might not be done with the MCU just yet. Rumors that he will have his own Disney+ series or voice Iron Man in an animated show. However, Downey Jr. seems pretty against any of that. Plus, a franchise bringing characters back from the dead is a slippery slope and will make fans think anything that happens from here on in isn't really final and doesn't mean as much.
