21 years after the debut of SpongeBob SquarePants, the yellow star's best friend Patrick is getting his very own spinoff.

Not many TV shows have staying power that allows them to stick around for more than ten seasons. However, animated shows seem to be exempt from that rule. Not only do shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park have way more than ten seasons each, but all of them are still going strong. The Simpsons might well be the most impressive of that trio as it enters its 30th consecutive year.

Not all animated shows that have the ability to go on forever need to be aimed at adults, though. SpongeBob SquarePants, which first hit our screens all the way back in 1999, is still going strong today. There have been 272 episodes across 12 seasons, the latest of which aired earlier this year. Not to mention the many movies, video games, and toys to have come off the back of the show's success.

Even better news for SpongeBob fans, it would seem as if the hits will keep on coming. As first revealed by Deadline, Patrick Star, SpongeBob's dim-witted next-door neighbor and best friend, is getting his very own spinoff show. Nickelodeon is currently in the process of finalizing details for what will be called The Patrick Star Show, and voiceover recording has already begun.

Bill Fagerbakke will continue to voice Patrick. For those unfamiliar with the actor, he played the role of Marshall's dad in How I Met Your Mother. It sounds as if Patrick's presence will be one of the only things The Patrick Star Show has in common with SpongeBob. Although familiar characters will make cameo appearances, it will largely feature a whole new cast of characters.

Patrick won't need to leave the comfort of his rock in Bikini Bottom in order to make that happen either. The Patrick Star Show will apparently take the form of a late-night talk show, it just won't air late at night. We're unsure whether the show will feature appearances from actual celebrities, or if the show's creators will make its animated guests from scratch.
