Veteran actor Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of The Suicide Squad, with a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad in the making. The revelation was made by none other than director James Gunn, who tweeted the Rocky star had gotten on board with the already star-studded project.

The cast includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and John Cena. Stallone's addition will mark a reunion with Gunn following his role as Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

"Always love working with my friend @officialslystallone & our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception," Ginn tweeted on the weekend alongside a photo of himself next to Stallone. "Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.”

There's no indication of what exactly Stallone's involvement will be as he wasn't in costume in the photo - Gunn also refused to elaborate in the comments. As you can see above, the photo was taken against the backdrop of a colorful bar, which could be a hint at where Stallone might appear in the film.

Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021. Actor Jai Courtney, who reprised his role as Captain Boomerang, says it isn't necessarily a sequel as it's "different."

"James like creatures and monsters and things as well. I felt like there was an injection of that kind of stuff with this take on it. It’s very funny," he told Collider last month. "It’s what you’ve come to expect from this kind of film.

"People are going to have a great time with it. it’s sad to see some of my castmates not involved, but i’m so thrilled to welcome a whole bunch more in. And I think it frees up the direction in which this franchise can take. It cracked things open in a way that we now won’t know what to expect from the next time. That’s cool for something like Suicide Squad. It’s not necessarily even a strict sequel, is the truth. It’s different, man, but people are gonna’ have a ball with it. I hope it’s massively successful.”
