Jeffrey Tambor is a California native who was born into a family with roots in Hungary and Russia. He began his career as a stage actor in 1972 but landed his first real on-stage performance on Broadway in 1976 where he took on the role of Sly's Servant in the play Sly Fox. That was his meal ticket and since then, he has made appearances in movies such as The Hangover, Meet Joe Black, Dr. Dolittle, and Eurotrip. With more than three decades of experience in the movie industry, Tambor has an extensive stack of films he has been a part of. Let's take a look at a few of the highest-grossing movies of his career.
The Hangover 2
Tambor's celebrity has earned him the opportunity to be a part of many multi-million-dollar film projects, earning him a net worth of $16 million and a lifestyle fit for the rich and famous. Fans will probably remember him from his appearance in all three installments of The Hangover. But the most lucrative of all the installments was The Hangover 2, which grossed an impressive figure of $586.7 million at the worldwide box office. His character, Sid Garner, is the father of Alan Garner (Zach Galifianakis) and Tracy Garner (Sasha Barrese). Although he is an aged man, he stays hip, cool, and laid back which makes him a fan favorite. A few other main characters in Hangover 2 include Phil (Bradley Cooper), Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), Stu (Ed Helms).
The Hangover
The original Hangover film series was released in 2009 and features the same trio of friends, known as "the Wolfpack" as they embark on a mission to Las Vegas to attend the bachelor party of their missing amigo, Doug Billings (Justin Bartha). The party becomes so wild and degenerate that none of the men recall the previous night's activities. And in the process, they lost track of the groom, Doug, who has limited time before his wedding begins. One of the surprise celebrities who made an appearance in the series was Mike Tyson, which was a shock to many! The original Hangover grossed $469.3 million dollars at the global box office. In total, all three Hangover movie series collected a gross figure of $1.4 billion from 2009-2013.
There's Something About Mary
In 1998, directors Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly got together and released the romantic comedy, There's Something About Mary. The film stars a young and vibrant Cameron Diaz, who plays Mary, and a quirky yet determined Ben Stiller, who plays Ted. Although Tambor has a very minor role as Sully, the friend of Pat Healy (Matt Dillon), his presence was enough to warrant him a deleted scene to explain his sudden disappearance. The film was received well by critics and was the third-highest-grossing film in America, peaking at $369 million on a $23 million budget.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
How The Grinch Stole Christmas, released in 2000, is a live-film adaptation of the Dr. Suess story of the Grinch (Jim Carrey). The Christmas movie was a big hit with the children who enjoy the Dr. Suess tales and makes for a fun family film. Jerry Tambor's character is more of a front-and-center role as the town's mayor, Mayor Augustus Maywho. Mayor Augustus turns out to be the Grinch's bully in school, which probably helped fuel his hatred for all things Christmas. Other actors include Taylor Momsen, Christine Baranski, and Anthony Hopkins. At the box office, the film did exceptionally well, grossing $345.1 million on a $123 million budget.
Dr. Dolittle
Tambor's name carries with it much weight in the movie industry. Following his role as Sully in the 1998 comedy, There's Something About Mary, he also appeared in the same year in Dr. Dolittle with heavy-hitter comedian, Eddie Murphy. His character, Dr. Fish, plays a specialized cat veterinarian who Dr. Dolittle (Eddie Murphy) calls for assistance with an ill, sizably larger cat - a tiger. The other top actors which starred in the movie were Kyla Pratt (Maya Dolittle), Kristen Wilson (Lisa Dolittle), Raven Symone (Charisse Dolittle), and Chris Rock as Rodney the hampster. The movie became a family classic and went on to produce a series of five movies in total, two in which Kyla Pratt took over Murphy's role as the lead animal whisperer/veterinarian. The 1998 film, however, grossed $294.4 million at the global box office.
Television Series Galore
Aside from actual live films, Tambor has also been present in a large number of animation films and television series. In 2013 and 2014, Tambor played the attorney for a high-profiled rap star, Ben Cohen, in Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit. The role was recurrent, spanning four episodes in Seasons 14 and 15. Much earlier in his career, he starred in the 1981 Tv series, Hill Street Blues, alongside Michael Warren, Veronica Hamel, Laurence Fishburne, and Alfre Woodard. Between 1992 and 1998, Tambor also played Hank Kingsley in the HBO series, The Larry Sanders Show, starring Garry Shandling, Rip Torn, and Wallace Langham. His brilliant performance as Hank secured him four Emmy Award nominations as a standout supporting actor. Then in 2003, he starred as George Bluth Sr. in the sitcom, Arrested Development, where his role as a real-estate businessman lands him in prison for white-collar crimes.
His most recent star role was in the comedy show, Transparent, which spanned from 2014-2019. Feeling the pressure of a divorce while being trapped in the web of a dysfunctional family, Maura Pfefferman (Jeffrey Tambor) is a father of three adult children, Sarah Pfeferman (Amy Landecker), Alexandra Pfefferman (Amy Landecker), and Joshua Pfefferman (Jay Duplass). He has a secret to share, but the spoilt children are so self-absorbed that he can't get through to them. But as fate would have it, everyone has a secret they're hiding, that eventually begins to be exposed. Tambor's experience has made him top-tier in the acting world. He was said to be receiving $100,000 per episode, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
