For some celebrities, the wedding cake has to shine just as brightly as the bride’s ring. After all, the wedding cake is often used as more than just a sweet dessert. They are a focal piece for which the entire color scheme and theme of the reception is based. With such an important position, a wedding cake must be beautiful, elegant, and above all, unique. Some couples choose a cake that is over ten feet tall, some adorn their wedding cake with thousands of flowers, some choose bright colors, and some choose to add dazzling diamonds to their confectionery masterpieces. In November of 2000, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones celebrated their marriage at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Taking center stage was the 10-tier vanilla and buttercream wedding cake. Created by Sylvia Weinstock, who has been deemed the ‘Leonard da Vinci of wedding cakes,’ the massive cake was so large that its top two tiers had to be removed just so that it could fit through the ballroom doors. When fully constructed the cake was six feet tall and adorned with thousands of edible sugar flowers.

The details of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky’s wedding were top-secret right up until the moments before the couple exchanged vows. Even the wedding cake designers and owners of La Tulipe Desserts, Maarten and Frances Steenman were kept a secret from the public as they whipped up Chelsea Clinton’s dream cake. Made of a gluten-free flour blend the vanilla sponge cake, was layered with dark chocolate mousse. Standing at 4 feet tall, the cake consisted of nine tiers all covered in vanilla fondant. Each tier was then decorated with a variety of roses, calla lilies, and orchids. In total there were approximately 1,000 sugar flowers and the cake weighed a massive 500 pounds.

When Kim Kardashian married NBA star Kris Humphries, the reality star made sure the wedding cake looked almost as glamorous as she did. The eight foot tall cake was created by cake designer Patrick Hansen. Weighing in at nearly 600 pounds, the chocolate-chip marble cake was decorated with butter cream frosting. While the height of the cake was extravagant, the colors of the cake were not. The tiers alternated between black and white, giving the wedding cake a simplistic modern feel. In the end, the cake was far too large to cut and sheet cakes were cut and served to the guests.

What’s the best way to add a lot of elegance and bling to a wedding cake? Just add Swarovski crystals. That’s what Ron Ben-Israel, the highly acclaimed cake designer of New York, New York, did when asked to create a cake for the movie Sex and the City 2. With over 4,000 individual crystals provided to Ron Be-Israel from Swarovski, he and his team set into creating a wedding cake that was over the top and mimicked ‘frozen water’ and the reflection of light. With these ideas in mind, Ron Ben Israel first whipped together a pure vanilla cake, which is called a White Cloud cake. Then the cake was assembled into five tiers from which delicate strands of Swarovski crystals were hung. The cake was placed on top of a custom acrylic stand, bringing the cake’s total height to 6 feet 4 inches. The sparkling masterpiece served 485 guest and took over 450 hours to create.

Prince Charles and Lady Diana wed in royal style at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, England. Their 1981 wedding was highlighted by a grand cake reaching five feet high. Designed by David Avery of the Royal Naval Cookery School, the wedding cake was decorated with roses, lilies of the valley and orchids along with Prince Charles and his family’s royal coat of arms. Though the cake was grand it was not the only one served. Twenty seven small cakes were also served to the guests of the wedding.

With a wedding party consisting of Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson, Liza Minnelli’s wedding cake had to be over the top. A towering 12-tiers high, the cake was black and white with red accents. There were sterling silver leafed stripes along the twelve tiers as well as red and purple sugar roses.

The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was an extravagant event that captivated many. But days before the royal couple exchanged vows, cake designer Fiona Caims was working to transport the cake from her bakery and then assemble it in Buckingham Palace. When completed the architecturally inspired masterpiece consisted of eight tiers of fruitcake that were covered in cream and white icing. A variety of 17 different kinds of flowers, each with its own symbolic meaning, were elegantly replicated into a sugar-paste flower and then added to the cake. English rose, Scottish thistle, Welsh daffodil, and Irish shamrock to feature the home nations were displayed on the seventh tier. Just below, on the sixth tier was a scrolling artistic display of the couple’s initials surrounded by sugar-pasted lily of the valley flowers to symbolize sweetness and humility. When completed, the cake was adorned with a total of 900 sugar-pasted florals and placed in the picture gallery of Buckingham Palace to await the royal couple’s cutting of the wedding cake.

In 2010, the Dallas Bridal Fair added their own luster to a wedding cake on display. The nine tiered masterpiece was created by Dallas’ Delicious Cake in conjunction with the Dallas Gold and Silver Exchange. Covered in ivory fondant and detailed with scrolling lines of silver ‘luster dust’, the cake weighed over 160 pounds. Strings of diamonds were draped along the nine tiers and as a final touch large diamonds and sapphires were placed along the base of the cake. In total the cake was decorated in 1,200 carats of diamonds and sapphires. With a total price of $1.3 million the cake served 320 people. That’s about $3,125 a slice!

The Luxury Bridal Show in Beverly Hills, California held the number one spot for housing the most expensive wedding cake back in 2006. The cake was created by cake designer Nahid Parsa of La Patisserie Artistique. Thick creamy white frosting covers the top of the cake and heavy ivory fondant covers the lower tiers. The middle tiers of the cake are coated with satin like ruffles and pastel flowers. The lowest tier of the cake contains small gold flakes, adding an extra bit of glimmer to the cake. But what makes this wedding cake a million dollar confectionery masterpiece are the large diamonds that are elegantly placed from top to bottom. Mimi So Jewelers of Beverly Hills supplied the large diamonds. While this wedding cake was visually stunning, what it tasted like is still a mystery. The guests of the Beverly Hills Luxury Bridal Show were not able to eat, or even come close to the cake as it was surrounded by six armed guards.

Created by Cake, a bakery in Chester, England, the world’s most expensive wedding cake is valued at a whopping $52.7 million! The edible masterpiece was on display at the National Gay Wedding Show in Liverpool in March of 2013. The cake consisted of eight tiers of white fondant icing. Then, to add a little sparkle, the cake was adorned with 4,000 diamonds. The sparkling gems were given by Russell and Case of Liverpool, England. After the event concluded the guests of the National Gay Wedding Show were able to eat the sparking masterpiece.
Depending on where you look, the cake is either valued at $36 million or $52.7 million, but regardless, it's far and away the most expensive cake on the list.
