Oh, the aughts, more commonly known as the 2000s. It was a time for low-rise jeans, Von Dutch trucker hats, foam parties, reality TV in its purest form, and glitter by the ton. What a time to be alive! Amidst the innocence and excitement carrying over from the 90s, the early 2000s also brought us dramatic meltdowns and iconic songs we still have on our feel-good playlists to this day... admit it.
Even though they both released breakout hits in the late 90s, topping the charts of TRL and charming our curiosities with pop-up videos, both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have made more than a reputation for themselves in the music scene – they've made imprints on our hearts and minds with some pretty gnarly imagery you can never unsee.
From such humble beginnings in the Mickey Mouse Club, we've seen these lovable pop divas go through their share of highs and lows, break-up to make-up, from rollercoaster romances to fashion fiascos. We will now decide, more than 20 years later, once and for all, who was the trashiest in their prime: Britney or Christina?
Britney vs. Christina: Betch Wars
It has been said that Christina started throwing shade at Ms. Spears long before her wedding to (now ex-husband) K-Fed. Before the big wedding, X-tina stated “she’s not trailer trash, but she sure acts that way.” What's worse is that Christina even went so low as to pick on Brit's engagement ring saying it looked like she bought it on QVC.
Damn girl, that was way harsh.
However, long before the days of Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, during a season finale of The Voice, Aguilera did a downright dirrty impression of her lifelong nemesis Spears where she made fun of the “Baby One More Time” star's intelligence. Aguilera, 34 at the time, donned a Catholic school girl outfit in a manner which clearly mocked Spears. Within days, a source close to Britney stated that she was not happy with the stunt calling her actions “rude.”
Despite all of what we know about the gals' ongoing public rival, Brit published a blog in 2005 titled, “Truth Be Told” where she admitted that she does in fact like Christina as a friend. Team Spears expressed that “Britney would love to be close with Christina again.”
It seems like Brit took the moral high ground and wins this round.
Let's investigate further.
Baby Dads And Overnight Fads
Christina and Britney both have two babies each, but only one of them has two baby daddies (Britney had both sons with K-Fed). And who has had more public marriages, break-ups, engagements, and divorces? You guessed it.
It's Britney, bitch.
Surprisingly, Christina only had one marriage and divorce (that we know of) to Jordan Bratman, and has expressly stated that she is in “no rush” to marry her new love and daughter's father, Matthew Rutler. The couple have been engaged since Valentine's Day 2014 and it seems that they have shared a close, loving parenthood taking care of the children, despite being arrested together for public intoxication in 2016.
Britney, on the other hand, is known the world over for her rocky relationships – 22 to be exact! – with the likes of the notorious Kevin Federline and her 55-hour marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander (no, not George from Seinfeld). Brit has definitely had her share of questionable men over the years, and without apology to boot.
Christina: The "Slutty" One
Christina purrs in Espanol and has released full albums in Spanish, proudly boasting Latina-Ecuadorian roots, but these are just a few of the ultra-sexy idiosyncrasies of Christina's legacy as a pop star. Christina has never been shy of “putting it all out there” trying on new looks and risque fashion trends over the years, but this has also backfired on her so many times to the point that her image comes off as slutty.
Even though many of her efforts were done with wholesome intentions, to put forth a positive body image for young girls, her stripped down photoshoots mixed with bare-it-all chaps didn't quite send the message she had hoped for. Additionally, the chaps trend never caught on and Christina retreated from the wild look as she rode off into the sunset.
We all remember when Eminem dissed Christina for rumored sexual relations with Fred Durst and Carson Daly in “The Real Slim Shady” video, but do you remember what started it all? If you guessed Christina, you'd be right. Christina called Eminem out on live TV where she giggled about his marriage to, then wife, Kim. Mr. Mathers was not happy about her remarks, so he wrote it into a song, and the rest his story.
How did she keep those things contained in that shirt?!
Britney: The “Crazy” One
With roots firmly planted in the deep south, Britney has often been slapped with the label of being a “dumb, girl-next-door” type of girl due to her girlish Southern Belle style. It doesn't surprise us that Christina has even called her out on it! Growing up in front of millions of people can be a tough gig to begin with, for Brit and Christina, but has Brit always been a hot mess? In 2007, Brit stole a Bic lighter from a gas station in Van Nuys – just for kicks. Innocent enough, right? Before jumping to any conclusions, let's not forget that Miss Spears has run over photographers, shaved her head bald, been held in the hospital for 72 hours overnight, and beat up a car with an umbrella during her personal crises. “Not That Innocent” is right.
So was Britney doing it just for a PR stunt? Was she doing it for attention? According to our research, Brit's outbursts and downward spirals were publicly addressed in the TV movie, I Am Britney Jean in 2013. Brit opened up about her troubles which is something we can commend her for. In fact, the “Stronger” singer was perfectly candid about her social anxiety and bipolar disorder, and how it has affected her life in general. At the same time that Brit's been called out for her behavior, she always owns up to her mistakes, restoring her image as a good girl overall, whereas Christina is still known as a bitch.
Christina's Untimely Wardrobe Disasters
While belting out a moving rendition of "At Last" at the legendary Etta James funeral in 2012, Christina sounded simply fabulous, but suffered a major malfunction that couldn't be covered up. Aguilera wore an all black outfit consisting of a skirt and classy blazer, but showed a little more cleavage than we'd hoped for, especially during such a mournful moment. While performing, it became evident that Xtina had something raunchy dripping down her leg, which she later confirmed was fake tanner that resulted with the horrific streaks.
Miss Christina was aware of the mishap as she tried to wipe her leg with the jacket sleeve, but in true Christina fashion, she unselfishly continued to sing her heart out, as lines of reddish-brown tan dribbled down her thighs, legs, and shins.
None of us were ready for Michael Jackson's death and surely, Christina's had better hair days than this one. At Michael Jackson's tribute show in October 2011, unflattering photos of Aguilera prompted the call-it-as-she-sees-it reality star Kelly Osbourne, to make some rather unsavory comments about Christina's weight and figure, calling her “fat.” Osbourne and Aguilera may have been feuding for many years, but the photos don't lie and Christina flaunted her body in a tight outfit without any apprehension. She is a pop star, after all, but is it what Michael would have wanted?
And these are just the more recent outfit blunders!
Britney And Justin's Matching Canadian Tuxedos
Sure Christina has had her share of wardrobe disasters, but for the most part they've been pretty forgivable, right?
Forever planted deep in our subconscious are the magical days of the pop-couple Jitney, or Brustin, or... Did we even have celeb couple combo names back then? More importantly, one thing we'll never forget about this iconic duo was their matching jean outfits on the red carpet at the American Music Awards in 2001. Britney and Justin first made their debut long before their public romance with the Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel when they were just kiddies, making public appearances at the MTV Awards and the VMAs.
Before Britney ever graced the movie scene with her biggest blunder of all time – her movie, Crossroads – Brit and Justin shared an unforgettable appearance dressed down in matching denim “formal” wear, from head to toe, also known as the Canadian tuxedo. Shudder.
Britney's Autotune Flub
Without autotune, Christina is a born singer with more soul than South Korea. But Britney, well, let's just say she's a born performer and autotune does its due diligence to giving her voice the added “oomph” she needs to make a pop hit.
Brit's pre-autotuned tracks have been leaked on multiple occasions, most recently resurfacing once more for the world to hear on BuzzFeed who revealed her not-o-tuned studio version of “Toxic.” Though Britney may not have “The Voice” Christina bellows, she does own up to her natural talents and abilities in other ways. Christina may be beating Britney by a margin in terms of actual singing ability, but Britney continues to out perform nearly every pop star on her “Radar.” While Britney gears up for her tour in Japan, Christina gives herself the star treatment by doing the Oreo dunk challenge.
Christina's National Anthem Flub
Who could forget the time Christina famously forgot the lyrics to the National Anthem?
This near career-shattering mix-up happened at Super Bowl XLV in 2011 and has since made Billboard's top 10 list for worst Super Bowl performances ever. During the live performance, Christina accidentally belted out, "Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, what so proudly we watched at the twilight's last reaming" even though the song's actual lyrics are: "Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming." She missed nearly an entire sentence!
In her statement, Christina said, “I got so caught up in the moment [of the song] that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”
Come on, Christina, you're better than that! We were all rooting for you!
Christina's Xtra Provocative Clothing (Or Lack Of)
Around the time she released her album Stripped in 2002, Christina also "stripped" her bubblegum-pop image by undergoing some serious changes. It all started with her baring it all for the album, but then Xtina amped it up several notches in her music videos and appearances. In retrospect, Christina's hair and spray tan could have won her a walk-on performance on Jersey Shore!
At that crucial time during Christina's career, she knew it was time to re-brand, just like all of the greats before her had revamped their personas time and time again. In addition to her wild-and-daring notorious chaps, Miss Aguilera also began referring to herself as "Xtina." Christina became a teenage boy's fantasy with her music video “Dirrty” and for baring damn near everything in the video for "Lady Marmalade" with the likes of Pink, Lil' Kim, and Mya. Christina was (and still is) a sex symbol, and she knows it.
Britney's Chaotic Life
This one's a no-brainer. Who doesn't remember Brit's wild meltdown in 2007? That's right, the one where she so notably shaved her head and attacked the paparazzi with an umbrella. As previously mentioned, Brit has had her share of exciting and crazy moments in her career.
Most people have forgotten the little-known reality show known as Chaotic which made its debut in 2005 where Brit and K-Fed went public with their relationship on UPN. Most would agree that this stunt was not a good move for her otherwise dazzling career up to that point. The show made Brit look deranged and their relationship awry, often giving away TMI with their PDA.
Less commonly referenced these days was that strange video released on YouTube where the singer appeared to have possibly drank a lil' something or even smoked a lil' something. In this strange and hilarious video, Britney Spears is seen unlike ever before wearing a white tank top and trucker hat, belching, yelling, and rambling on about nonsense in her down home Louisiana accent. Kevin Federline videotapes as Britney confesses that she feels she is “missing out on life” as she munches on snacks and gets existential. Huh?
Three-Way Makeout Mania
There was a lot of talk about after Britney Spears' kiss with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards, but we can't simply forget that Christina Aguilera shared an onstage smooch, too, during the 2001 tribute to Madonna.
In classic Madonna fashion, the Queen arose from a decorated birthday cake, dapperly dressed in a suit, because she is Madonna after all. As the three danced and sang the Madonna hit, “Hollywood,” we were able to witness some sexual on-stage tension, and then it happened... Britney, Madonna, and Christina locked lips!
What's even weirder about that incident was that Christina called Britney out yet again, for her “strange behavior” during their rehearsals for the VMAs. “Every time I tried to start a conversation with her – well, let’s just say she seemed nervous the whole time,” Christina added, “someone who desperately needs guidance.” Maybe Brit just didn't want to be bothered, Christina.
Aguilera Frees The Nipple
When Christina blunders are brought into question, many people may not remember this one, but while performing a song called "The Prayer" with her protégé, Chris Mann, Christina Aguilera freed the nipple before it was even a thing.
Since her breast was unsupported by a bra, or anything at all for that matter, her boob was free to flop out during the performance on its own accord and had to be discreetly put back inside of her dress on stage. While reaching for such a high note, Christina, at one point, had completely forgotten all about her flailing breast.
The incident was like Janet Jackson's Super Bowl nip-slip all over again, but blonder! While it may have happened more recently, we're still considering it!
Behind-The-Scenes Diva Showdown: Britney Or Christina?
We've done our research and heard reports from both Nashville AND The Voice that Christina Aguilera is rude, demanding, and the absolute biggest diva to accommodate.
Production insiders at ABC have told Star Magazine that Christina was totally rude to everyone from the moment she arrived to work on the set of Nashville back in 2015. Not only that, but she even shaded her co-star at the time, Blake Shelton by saying, “I’m finally beating Blake at something. It’s amazing and awesome, but you know, I’m milking every second of it.”
Aguilera asked for not one, but THREE hairdressers, to be at her beck and call 24-7 because she was so hung up about what Tennessee weather might do to her precious locks. An unknown source claimed that she even insisted that she look hotter and sexier than any other cast member, including that her heels be sky high – higher than anyone else's on the show. This isn't even anything new. There's been talk of X-tina being a bitch for as long as she's been on the scene, even Britney called her out in an interview for not being very nice.
When it comes to being the bigger diva, Christina takes the cake. (Pun not intended.)
Speaking of cake, insiders have said that Britney is as sweet as they come. While working on The X Factor, Demi Lovato expected Ms. Spears to be a royal diva due to the nature of her fame, but in reality was as down to earth as they come. Together, Lovato and Spears were able to focus on the contestants rather than petty feuds with each other.
The Evolution Of Christina vs. Britney
Christina's almost-wardrobe malfunction while performing with Chris Mann was even more discouraging than it was encouraging during her run on The Voice, but was that Christina's worst? Afraid not. It has been reported that Christina did not leave The Voice, but was fired for her meltdowns over Gwen and Blake stealing the limelight. The Voice apparently paid the couple bonuses for on-stage duets which was what set Christina off, stating that Gwen has “no vocal talent.” Wow.
Unsurprisingly, Britney, is enjoying her final year as a sold-out headliner in Las Vegas. Brit began her residency in Sin City in 2013 and has since been performing in what we can only assume is her natural habitat.
While Christina has had her share of ad campaigns for the likes of Sketchers and later, Pepsi, she has also continued making music and doing what she loves. Her weight has fluctuated over the years, but that never stopped Christina from doing her thang. Hell, some of us even love her more for embracing her figure.
And even with the flop of her Britney Jean album and more recently, Glory, Brit, too, has continued wowing audiences worldwide with international sold-out tours. Britney Spears has continued making a name for herself well into her 30s with her latest album released in 2016.

While Christina has always bounced back, she still hasn't quite surpassed Britney in her iconic status. Though both gals have since cleaned up their images and owned up to their mishaps over the years, Christina will remain the trashiest pop queen of the aughts.
